SCAM ALERT: Attorney General & HSD Warn about New Mexico Medicaid Program Phishing Scam Callers pose as employees of the New Mexico Medicaid program Santa Fe, NM – Today, Attorney General Hector Balderas and Human Services Department Secretary Brent Earnest issued a joint Scam Alert to warn New Mexicans about a new scam that involves callers claiming to work for the New Mexico Medicaid program while phishing for personal and financial information. The solicitors are calling individuals several times a day and asking for their name, Social Security Number, and Medicaid number. Medicaid recipients should never provide personal information such as Social Security Number or Medicaid identification numbers over the phone to unsolicited callers. The callers are not affiliated with the New Mexico Human Services Department, its Medicaid program, the Centennial Care managed care organizations, or the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. “Scammers never stop running out of ways to try to defraud New Mexicans so we must always be diligent when answering calls from numbers we do not recognize,” said Attorney General Hector Balderas. “Government agencies or health insurance organizations will never call you to ask you for your personal or financial information, so do not give it out over the phone, ever. I am urging New Mexico families to be on guard to protect their finances and to prevent identity theft.” “The Human Services Department takes attempts to defraud our clients seriously. We have alerted the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the managed care organizations about this apparent identity theft scam,” Human Services Department Secretary Brent Earnest said. “The Human Services Department does not call recipients unsolicited and ask for their personal information. Recipients of any public assistance programs administered by HSD should never give out personal information over the phone to unsolicited callers.” If you have received an unsolicited call from someone claiming to be a representative of the Human Services Department or the New Mexico Medicaid program, you may file a complaint with the FTC at https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov or http://www.nmag.gov/consumer-complaint-instructions.aspx If you have already fallen victim to this or a similar scam, please visit http://www.identitytheft.gov. ###
