AUGUST 2014 TUESDAY MEANDERING HIKES
There’s no need to e-mail (
[email protected]) or call (415-457-3949/415-517-0488) Wendy ahead of time unless it’s a shuttle hike. Anyone who is taking Sir Francis Drake is encouraged to meet at St. Rita School to carpool to Point Reyes. It’s opposite the Fairfax Library but the entrance to the parking lot is on Marinda (exit is on Sir Francis Drake). Wendy teaches there and has permission for us to use the parking lot. $17/hike. Let friends who’d be interested know! TUESDAY, AUGUST 5 - SKY TRAIL TO BEAR VALLEY SHUTTLE HIKE NOTE EARLY START TIME TO ALLOW FOR THE SHUTTLE We’ll meet at Bear Valley AT 9:20 am and carpool to Sky Trail. When we get to Mt. Wittenberg instead of taking Z Ranch and Horse Trail to make a loop, we’ll take Old Pine to the Bear Valley Trail. We’ll need some people who are not in a rush to drive people back to Sky Trail. Restrooms at Bear Valley, none at Sky Trail trailhead but some as we pass Coast Camp and at Divide Meadow on the way back. TUESDAY, AUGUST 12 - NO HIKE TUESDAY, AUGUST 19 - TOMALES BAY STATE PARK SHELL BEACH SHUTTLE HIKE Something old and something new! We’ll hike from the parking lot on Pierce Point Road that’s just before the turn to Heart’s Desire to Shell Beach. Last year there were ripe huckleberries! Wetland plants like Marsh Rosemary, Ledum, and Jaumea should be in bloom. Meet at the Shell Beach parking lot. After you pass Inverness, take a right on Camino del Mar (there’s an inn on your left; it’s just where the road starts going uphill.) Follow it to the parking lot. We’ll carpool from there. No restrooms at trailhead. Meet at 9:00 am to carpool from St. Rita.

TUESDAY, AUGUST 26 - BOLINAS RIDGE-RANDALL TRAIL SHUTTLE HIKE NOTE EARLY START TIME Slightly longer than usual at 7.4 miles, but lots of downhill. There are usually LOTS of huckleberries around this time! We’ll meet at 9:30 am on Highway 1 at the bottom of Randall Trail. The Randall Trailhead is about 3 miles north of Dogtown and about 3 miles south of Five Brooks. (The Point Reyes National Seashore says to allow 15 minutes for the drive from the Bear Valley Visitor Center, and that the trailhead is just under 6 miles south from the intersection of Highway 1 and Sir Francis Drake at Olema). Park in one of the large dirt pullouts on either side of the road. (The Park Service notes that the sign for the Randall Trail is aligned parallel to Highway 1 on the east side of the road and can easily be missed). From there we’ll carpool up the Bolinas-Fairfax Road to Ridgecrest Blvd. and hike along Bolinas Ridge Fire Road. No restrooms at either meeting place or trailhead. (Stop along the way at Five Brooks to use a pit toilet.) Meet at St. Rita at 8:35 am to carpool. (FALL 1 COLLEGE OF MARIN HIKES BEGING ON TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 2ND)
