Pancake Breakfast & Sunday School Kick Off Sunday, August 28 9:45 am Are you interested in Sunday School but not sure what class to attend? Do you wonder what your children and youth are learning in Sunday School? Did you used to attend but have gotten out of the habit? If you can answer yes to any of these, this breakfast is for you. The Tuesday Morning Men’s Breakfast group will be cooking and the Children’s Council is providing fun and crazy toppings. All children, youth and adults are invited to a special pancake breakfast with all the toppings. Come and learn all about Sunday School at Gibsonville UMC.

On a recent Sunday morning in July, one of the hottest days of the year, Angela was talking with the children of the church about water. She showed them a plant that had been in her office for a while and had not been watered. It was beginning to dry up and wither. She reminded the children that we all need water: plants, animals, and people. Her conversation with the children reminded me of the importance of water for all of human life. How appropriate it is that the sacrament which marks our entrance into the church is one involving water. When someone asks what baptism means, one way to answer is to say that baptism means everything that water means. It means deliverance (think about how the children of Israel were delivered from slavery through the Red Sea), and it means salvation (think about how Noah and his family were saved from the flood—1 Peter 3:20-21). Water can mean death and new life. In baptism, we are buried with Christ so that we are dead to sin, and we are raised to new life with Christ (Romans 6:39). Whether we are baptized as children or adults, baptism sets in motion a whole lifelong process of dying and rising with Christ, of repenting of our sins and accepting the freedom God gives us to serve Him. Baptism also makes us part of a body; through baptism, we are incorporated into the body of Christ. In baptism, we not only enter into covenant with God, we also enter

into covenant with the body of Christ, the church. Baptism means that we are part of one another, connected as parts of a body are attached to each other. We need each other. Whenever someone of any age is baptized, the church promises to help this person grow as a Christian disciple. As part of the baptismal service, the congregation promises: ―We will surround these persons with a community of love and forgiveness, that they may grow in their service to others. We will pray for them, that they may be true disciples who walk in the way that leads to life.‖ This means that we as a church have a responsibility to help each baptized child and adult to grow as a disciple of Jesus Christ. Hillary Clinton once said that it takes a whole village to raise a child. I would add that it takes a whole church to baptize a child and to raise the child in the Christian faith and life.

age of 12, the church gives them special instruction on the meaning of their baptism, and they have the chance to confess for themselves their own faith. Once a year (on the 2nd Sunday of Epiphany) we renew our baptismal vows, and periodically, we renew our membership vows (as we did in last year’s PASS IT ON campaign). I want to invite you to enter into a season of renewing our baptismal and membership vows. Let us prayerfully ask ourselves,

It is within this baptismal covenant that our membership vows also have meaning. In our vows of membership, we promise to support the church with our ―prayers, presence, gifts, and service.‖ These are sacred promises, similar in nature to our marriage vows. At a wedding, a man and a woman pledge themselves to each other. When someone joins the church, they make a similar sacred promise to be faithful to the church.

When we say, ―Remember your baptism,‖ it means to reflect on these kinds of questions. It does not mean that we necessarily remember the actual moment of our baptism, but that we remember the meaning of our baptism: that we have been claimed by God as His children, and now we are invited to live as His children. Thank you for the many ways you are remembering your baptism.

From time to time, we remind ourselves of our baptismal and membership vows. When young people get to be around the

 ―How can I live out my baptism, my commitment to lead a Christian life?‖  ―How can I give and pray and serve and be present for the church?‖  ―How can I support and love the children, youth, and adults of this church who have been baptized into the faith and now need to be nourished and strengthened in the faith?‖

Peace,

Jonathan

Come Give the Gift of Life! The Red Cross has issued an appeal for blood donors of all types due to a critical blood shortage across our nation. In May and June, donations were at the lowest level the Red Cross has seen in this timeframe in over a dozen years, while demand for blood products remained steady. Because of that, The Red Cross needs blood donors now more than ever. All types are needed, but especially O negative, which can be used to treat any patient. If you would like to make an appointment to give blood, you may contact Faye Cheek (449-7990) or Betsy Greeson (449-6617). GUMC’s goal is 50 pints! We are also in need of baked goods to be given to the donors. If you would be willing to provide some goodies, please drop them off any time during the day on Monday, August 29.

2011 Annual Conference Report

MISSION OPPORTUNITIES

The members of the 2011 Western North Carolina Annual Conference met at Lake Junaluska, June 8-12. Members of the conference approved a recommendation to reduce the number of districts and superintendents from 15 to eight, beginning at the end of the 2012 session of the Annual Conference. The new district structure is to be fully operational by January 2013. Bishop Goodpaster will name a transition team to assist in defining the boundaries of each district, roles of the superintendents and other matters related to legal and property issues. The United Methodist Church’s General and Jurisdictional Conferences will be held next year, and a major item of business this year was to elect delegates who will represent us. Through a series of ballots taken throughout the conference, clergy and laity elected 28 delegates each that will share the responsibilities of attending these conferences next year. Members approved the 2012 conference budget of $14,353,102, which is down about $56,000 from 2011. Three offerings taken during conference worship services totaled $82,516, and were designated for the Central Conference Pension Initiative, an effort to help establish pensions for United Methodist pastors in Africa. Preachers for the 2011 session of Annual Conference, in addition to Bishop Larry M. Goodpaster, included the Rev. Shane L. Stanford, Gulf Breeze, FL; the Rev. Susan Pendleton Jones, Duke Divinity School; Bishop Gregory V. Palmer, Illinois Great Rivers Conference and the Rev. Ashley Crowder Stanley, High Point. Two times of teaching and bible study were led by Bishop Goodpaster. The laity report was delivered by Robert Upchurch, conference lay leader; Mildred Carter, United Methodist Women president; Hank Dozier, United Methodist Men president; and Molly Clay, Conference Council on Youth Ministries president. Dr. Gregg Drabek, a surgeon and member of First United Methodist, Rutherfordton, gave the laity address. Bishop Goodpaster, in an evening mission celebration on Friday, also reported that 33,038 persons were sent out to serve through United Methodist Volunteers in Mission (UMVIM) and other mission teams. And, a total of 1,096,938 people were served by community ministries in the areas of outreach, justice and mercy. At the ordination service on Saturday, Goodpaster ordained five deacons and 21 elders as members in full connection, and transferred two elders from other denominations. The average age of those ordained was 43. In addition 28 provisional members were commissioned, including 6 deacons and 22 elders. The lives of 27 clergy and 25 clergy spouses who passed away during the previous year were honored at a Celebration of Life Service on Saturday. And, 39 retiring clergy with 1,155 years of service among them were recognized. And lastly, on Sunday Bishop Goodpaster fixed the appointments of all clergy for the upcoming conference year, with Jonathan and Angela Marlowe again being appointed to serve and grow with us here at Gibsonville. If you have any questions or want further details, please let us know. More information can also be found on the conference website at www.wnccumc.org. We were honored to represent you.

Can you believe spreading peanut butter and jelly, is the working of God’s hand? Does feeding hungry children, make it easier to understand? Jesus said, suffer the little children and let them come unto me. For there’s a place in God’s heaven that belongs to such as these. So spread that peanut butter, and spread that jelly too. For blessed are the sandwich makers, there’s a place up there for you! Written by: John L. Amick _______________________________________________________
