But ad revenue is steady and I can build a business on that.” —Julian Farrior, CEO and Founder, Backflip Studios
Goal Founded in April 2009 in Boulder, Colorado, Backflip Studios is a small startup focused on iPhone games. Their first game, Ragdoll Blaster, reached the top 5 paid list and their second game, Paper Toss, became the number 1 free app in the store and has been downloaded more than 16 million times. Following the success of Paper Toss, Backflip launched Paper Toss: World Tour which expands game play for $0.99. In addition to selling their paid games, Backflip wanted to monetize the millions of users who actively play Paper Toss. They also needed a platform that enabled them to show their ads to promote other Backflip games to their existing users. Solution Backflip inserted AdMob ads into the free version of Paper Toss. AdMob’s solution gave Backflip complete control over where the ads were placed in their app to not interfere with game play. Backflip also determines how often ads appear, to be sensitive to the user experience. Backflip also utilized AdMob’s house ads functionality to convert users of Paper Toss to the paid version of the game Paper Toss World Tour. Backflip is able to dynamically allocate its inventory between monetizing with ads and distributing its own properties depending on their current initiatives.
