ARGUMENTS: You claim that even though war in general is horrible, sometimes it is necessary for progress. You once said: “War has its evils. In all ages it has been the minister of wholesale death and appalling desolation; but it has also been the instrument of accomplishing the great end of human elevation and human happiness.” You believe in Manifest Destiny. You point out the economic benefits of Texas and the American Southwest. It has plentiful and valuable natural resources. Its climate and rich soil is perfect for growing fruits, cotton, sugar, and molasses. Its silver and gold mines have been estimated to be among the greatest in the world. You point out that Texas and the Southwest are strategic locations for trade. Texas secures the use of the Gulf of Mexico and the Red River provides access to the Mississippi. Gaining the Southwest would provide vital access to the Pacific Ocean. In justifying US control of Texas and the Southwest, you point out that no natural barrier separates that area from the rest of the United States. “If the Creator had separated Texas from the Union by mountain barriers, the Alps or the Andes, these might be plausible objections; but He has united every atom of the soil and every drop of the waters of the mighty whole. He has linked their rivers with the great Mississippi, and marked and united the whole for the dominion of one government and the residence of one people.” Pointing out the benefits of that land for our country, you believe that by conquering Mexico we are obtaining more land for US settlers. Additionally, you feel US control of the Southwest would also help the Mexicans who live there. The US will bring new ideas about government, more cities and civilization, more technology, new religious practices, American culture and tradition, and new farming techniques which will help improve the land.
