Ball Hockey Rules

CONDUCT SPORTSMANSHIP: Have Fun! Show Sportsmanship and have Respect for your fellow Players & Referees. REFEREE: Referees will have a whistle and Island Summer Games Shirt on to be recognized. Calls and decisions made by the referee are to the discretion of the referee and must be respected by all players at all times. The referee’s call or decision is final and there should be no disputing. Zero tolerance. DISCUSSING PLAYS WITH REFEREE: If the Team needs to speak to the referee, the only player that should be discussing any calls will be the Team Captain which will be the voice of the team and shall talk directly to the ref regarding calls and play.

GAME STYLE GAME STYLE: Games will be 25 minutes long, with 2.5 minute warm up, 2 periods of 12.5 minutes of play, and a half time break of 2.5 minutes. Referee will have a stopwatch, to help control the times to their best ability. Ref will stop the clock for any major reason such as: ball out of play or injured player etc. ROUND ROBIN TIE-BREAKER: If a game ends in a tie, there is no OT, it will go to a shootout. Pick your 3 best players to shoot (The same player may not shoot back to back). If it goes to another round of shootout the same 3 shooters must shoot again in the same order.

TOURNEY STYLE TOURNEY STYLE: We will divide the teams into Conferences (Pacific, Central, Metropolitan and Atlantic). Teams from each conference will only play teams within their conference until playoffs. This will allow for us to have more games during the day. Round Robin style with 3 guaranteed games. Top 2 teams from each conference will advance to playoffs. SEEDING FOR PLAYOFFS: Seeding for playoffs will be determined by wins & loses. See below for a Tie. Seeding tie-breaker for playoffs will result in the total goals for and against difference, and in the outcome of another tie it will come down to the team with the greater amount of goals.

TIE BREAKER FOR PLAYOFF SEEDING: It will result in the total goals for and against difference, and in the outcome

of another tie it will come down to the team with the greater amount of goals. PLAYOFFS: Top 4 teams from each conference will advance to playoffs. PLAYOFF TIE-BREAKER: If a playoff game ends in a tie, there is NO shootout; the game will immediately start an Over-time of a 10 minute period. The score at the end of the OT will result in the final score. If again there is a tie at the end of the OT, the playoff game will result in a shootout. At which point the team can pick their line up of shooters. Shooters can’t take back to back shots or repeated shots until each player on their roster shots at least once.

SCHEDULE GAME SCHEDULE: Game Schedule will be posted on our web page prior to event, sent out to Team Captains and posted ‘Day of’ at the event! At any given time the ISG Coordinator can change the Game Schedule due to many factors that can take place during a tourney, so we advise teams to remain close by to be aware of changes to Game Schedule.

GAME PLAY TEAM SIZE: Minimum of 4 players including the goalie and may have up to a max of 8 players. Teams can be co-ed. Games will be played 3-on-3 and a goalie (i.e. 4 players total playing at one time on the rink ((3 players and 1 goalie)) with a maximum of 4 subs = 8 total on a team). SUBS: You can change as you like during the game just be sure to not have ‘too many players’ on the rink at one time. You can only go on the rink once your player is 1 meter or 3 feet (approx a stick length) from your bench area and must change within front of your bench. BACKUP PLAYERS OR RECRUITING PLAYERS: Back Up player may play for your team if you are short a player, however they must check in with referee and be placed on the game score sheet roster and must have been already registered player for the tournament. You may not recruit a player from another team or pick up a player that is not on your roster, if a team-mate is on your roster and shows up late they may still play. GOALIE CHANGES: During the game goalies are NOT permitted to make changes with other goalies; unless deemed injured by the Referee. If the goalie is “pulled” and a player wants to play, a team can have no goalie and play with 4 players. However

Ball Hockey Rules

once the goalie is pulled you cannot put him back in net, so save this for the dying minute of a game. The Team Captain must announce to the Referee that they are pulling the goalie, play does NOT stop, so do it at a convenient time. FACEOFFS: At the beginning of each game and at the half way mark after a short break, there will be a faceoff’s. Whistle is blown and Referee drop’s the ball. AFTER A GOAL: Immediately after a goal there is No face-off, however the team that scored must get back to their own side within 20 seconds as play will resume right away. HAND PASS: You can hand pass in the defensive zone or offensive zone. Unless 2 hand passes happen back to back. If a player covers the ball in the goalies crease with his hand in an attempt to prevent a goal or uses his hand (off stick) to score a goal, the opposing team will be awarded a penalty shot and goal is disallowed. BALL COVERED BY GOALIE: If goalie covers the ball, play is dead; it is the team’s possession at the side or back of the net to their discretion. The opposing team gets a stick length room and or 20 seconds to move the ball. BALL LEAVES RINK: Like the good old days of street hockey, it will be the classic “Out off you rule.” If you shot the ball out of play or the ball is 'out off you', the ball is awarded to the opposite team. TIME OUTS: Each team can use one ‘1 minute’ timeout per game, the Captain of the team must make the call and show the referee the “T” symbol with their hands and say “Time Out” to the referee. This can be done at anytime but must not interrupt a potential play or goal. Possession goes back to the team that had the ball when the time out was called. FORFEIT: If a team fails to show up for their scheduled game or has 2 or less players, the clock will be started for a period of 15 minutes before warm-ups. If the team doesn’t show up in that time frame the team on the rink will automatically be awarded the win with a 1 nothing victory.

PENALTIES NO CONTACT: NO contact. NO pushing, shoving, checking, roughhousing, or unsportsmanlike conduct of any kind. No slashing, hooking, tripping, cross-checking, high sticking. Doing so will result in a penalty shot for the other team. More serious cases will see game misconduct with such things but not limited to: intention to injure, spearing, but ending, slew footing, two hand slash, cross-checking from behind,

pushing from behind shall result in a player immediately being removed from the tournament according to the discretion of the referee and/or tournament supervisor. In the case of a Team creating a serious incident a team could be kicked out of the tournament. In addition, the entire team could also be removed from the tournament based on the questionable actions of one team member. (In extreme cases participants may also face legal consequences for any inappropriate actions.) Play with sportsmanship and respect for your fellow player. 3 STRIKE SYSTEM: 3 strike rule is simple, if you get 3 penalties in one game, you will sit out the rest of the game, if these 3 penalties happen within the last 5 minutes of play, you will miss the next game. This is a call made by the discretion of the referee. DELAY OF GAME: If you delay games it will result in a loss of possession. Standing behind the net for 2 minutes, can be considered delay of game especially in these short tournament style games. This is a call made by the discretion of the referee. TOO MANY PLAYERS: If you have more than 3 players (and 1 goalie) on the court at any one time and a player touches the ball it is considered “too many player.” A penalty shot is awarded. Be careful especially when subbing on and off, you must only change when your player is 1 meter or 3 feet (about a stick length away) from in front of your bench or sideline area. This penalty does not apply to the three strike penalty rule. SLAP SHOTS: Slap shots are NOT allowed, however ‘snap shots’ are allowed below the waist only. What is a slap shot you ask? Slap shots are considered to be any shot taken which a stick is over waist height to start with. Whether accidental or intentional, slap shots are NOT allowed and will be penalized with a penalty shot. This is to the consideration of the Referee. This penalty does not apply to the three strike penalty rule. (The reason for this rule is to keep sticks down no one wants to get a stick in the face.) HIGHSTICKS: Keep your stick down! No high sticks! We encourage no high sticks and we mean it, if the Ref feels you are high sticking with or without the ball, it is an immediate penalty, awarded with a penalty shot to the opposite team. This penalty does not apply to the three strike penalty rule. DISPUTING REF CALLS: Disputing a Referee's call or decision can result in a warning and or a penalty shot, to the

Ball Hockey Rules

discretion of the Ref. Please respect Ref’s calls and decisions. PENALTY SHOTS: Must be taken from direct center of the rink, ball will be placed by Ref (so the goalie can be signaled and be ready), whistle will blow, penalty shot is taken, play ends after the shot. The player that was infracted is the only player that can take the penalty shot, unless the player is injured and cannot take the shot, a sub player can take the shot for the injured player.

WEATHER CONDITIONS RAIN OR SHINE: We will play rain or shine! Only under extreme weather conditions, such as lighting will we postpone. Under such conditions all teams will be instructed by the ISG coordinator and or Ref’s to report to the organized area for further instruction. At this point scheduled games could be changed.

OTHER OPEN CUTS & WOUNDS: If you have an open cut or wound and it is bleeding you must leave the game and it must be covered. First Aid kit will be on site and available. PROHIBITED: Weapons or Drugs are not allowed on the event site. Alcohol is allowed to be in the designated beer gardens at all times; if outside of this designated area, you risk being removed from the event and put your team at risk as well. If at any point, intoxication has reached a level which affects the players’ ability to play the game; they are to cease continuing to play in the tournament. This will be at the discretion of the referee or ISG Coordinator. Please respect event staff.
