Benton Elementary Homework Guidelines Each classroom teacher at Benton Elementary will decide independently when and what to assign as homework based on student needs. Homework may be assigned whole class, to a select group, or individually. Staff will consider the following questions before making the decision to assign work to be done at home: A. Does the homework have a clear purpose? B. Can the student complete the homework without assistance? C. How much time will it take for the student to complete the work? If the decision is made to send work home, staff will follow these guidelines: 1. Homework will be treated as feedback · homework will be used as formative feedback, not as a summative assessment of learning 2. Teachers will check for understanding before assigning homework · homework will not be used for new learning; it will be to practice what has already been learned · if students can’t prove the work can be completed without assistance, it shouldn’t be assigned 3. Teachers will track completion of homework, but it will not be counted as part of the grade · the completion/non-completion of homework can be reported in the work skills portion of the grade card 4. Teachers will briefly review assigned homework before sending it home · teachers will take a few minutes at the end of the day to ensure students are clear on what they are being asked to do 5. Work will be checked · not every part of the assignment needs to be checked, just enough to ensure it is completed as expected · feedback will be given · homework doesn’t need to be collected
