POWER DOWN WEEK

BIKE TO FARM CHALLENGE Every day trucks roll into the city delivering vegetables and fruits, eggs and dairy products to your local grocery store. The average food travels over 1500 miles from the farm to the store. We think that is expected with bananas and coffee, perhaps with oranges and avocados, but even the vegetables Wisconsin grows may have travelled from Florida or Mexico or California. If the trucks stopped rolling, where would we get our food? Cities usually have no more than 3 days supply of food. Without trucks, even meat, milk and produce from Wisconsin would not get to the city. What if - you had to get your own food, without a car?

BICYCLE, WALK, RIDE A HORSE OR HITCH UP A PONY CART. HOW MANY OF THESE FARMS CAN YOU VISIT USING NO FOSSIL FUEL? On the opposite side is a list of farms and CSAs which are within 50 kilometers of either the Riverwest Coop or the Bayview Outpost. The miles indicated are using local roads (not always bike paths) to reach these farms. Your Challenge: Visit as many of these farms during PowerDown Week (June 25 - July 2) as you can, using non-fuel-powered transportation. You are encouraged to use bicycles, but if you wish to walk, ride a horse or take a horse-drawn carriage, you are welcome to do so. As the farmers may be away or very busy, you may simply reach the driveway at the road to record a visit. You are welcome to contact the farmer in advance if you wish a tour or would like to purchase any of their products. Record the means you use (bicycle, horse, foot) and mark the date & time you visited:
