The goal of the Damien High School Mountain Biking Team (DHSMTB) and our Road Biking

Club is to attract our young Spartan men and St. Lucy’s women to the sport of cycling. The club and team are technically two separate entities on campus but there is a lot of crossover in riders. 2017-18 starts our 6th year with a road biking club and 5th year as an official mountain biking team. The mountain bike racing team is an official school varsity sport that competes in the SoCal NICA league with 80 other high schools, and at state championships against another 80 in the NorCal league. The NICA program has spread to 20 different states as of this year and has been expanding at a rate of 2-3 states per year. Last year we competed in Division 1 of the SoCal NICA league with 22 riders from Damien and St. Lucy’s. More than half of the team qualified for the state championship race where we placed 16th in the state. We need more girls to be able to be more competitive which means we need more funding to help them with bikes. We are the only true co-ed sports team at Damien with several girls from St. Lucy’s all competing as one team with the Damien boys. This year it looks like we will have quite a few more girls and we’re estimating our team size to be over 32 riders.

The most visible segment of our group is the competitive mountain bike racing team however our members range from novice recreational riders to top-level racing cyclists. We find that one of the best features of our cycling team is that anyone can participate. Joining the team is the first experience many of the kids have with group cycling but most remain cyclists after they have ignited the passion. Several of the graduates from the first two years are now riding in colleges and many of the current high school riders and graduates have jobs working in bike shops. We are striving to create a community around this fun, and healthy activity but in order to grow we need increased support. The popularity of cycling is on the rise in the US with the success of American cyclists in competition around the world. America’s elite cyclists are perpetuating the cycle of strengthening and expanding the domestic cycling programs which helped them achieve their more recent successes. The DHSMTB is one such program and we hope to continue building the cycling community with your support. The DHSMTB is inviting your company to join our team for the 2017-18 season. Contributions and donations help defray the costs associated with maintaining highly visible and competitive racing teams. A season of travel and lodging expenses, meals, spare parts, etc. add up quickly. One racing bicycle costs from $700.00 to $4,000.00. The bicycle alone is often more than an individual can afford and too often students families are unable to help provide the support needed. An individual will still need to pay for jerseys, bibs, wind breakers, race fees, camping fees, food, etc in order to compete. Contributions to the DHMTB allow us to help defray as much of these costs for our members as our budget will allow. Over 30% of students at Damien are receiving financial aid due to low family income so the more donations we

receive the more riders we can support and the more costs we can help cover. We believe success begets success. A competitive DHSMTB team enhances the image of Damien and our sponsors. A team and individuals need quality equipment to compete on an equal footing with other clubs. Your support will help us reach a higher level of competition and rider participation. The DHSMTB proudly recognizes our donors and contributors in our publications, on our web site, and (for those contributing at the appropriate level) with a placement on our team clothing and on our racing trailer. All team and club members wear these uniforms alike. We also sell team apparel to the school, local bike shops, parents and a very large growing alumni biker population. Please take a moment to review the enclosed proposal and additional information about the DHSMTB. Included are the club mission statement, our current prospectus, our upcoming schedule, our projected 2017-18 budget, an overview of the benefits of sponsorship, and detailed instructions for contributing. These materials explain how, together, we can enhance our shared community and affiliate your company, name, or product with our first-class organization. Should you accept this chance to associate yourself with the DHSMTB you will be graciously supporting our mission. You will also secure an exciting opportunity to be associated with our unique, rewarding organization and getting a tax write off. We look forward to you joining our team promoting health and community while our high school athletes proudly represent you. DHSMTB 2017-18 Prospectus: At this time there is a lot of work required to make the DHSMTB a strong organization as this is only the fifth year the mountain biking team has been in existence at the school. During our inaugural year we had 20 students on the team, making us one of the largest in the league. The outlook for this year is that we’ll have between 30 and 35 students on the racing team and an even larger recreational body of over 50 students, parents and alumni within the club going on road rides. This is a growth of over 50%! While our growth is very exciting to us, it also introduces more challenges due to the costs involved of running the team and club. Our average club ride now consists of around 20 people. We hope our racing team will always be a strong competitor at races but there is more to be done to engender a recreational cohort within the club which bonds our current students with alumni and parents. We expect that by introducing more participants from our campus to cycling we will be able to provide a healthy recreational opportunity and help new members discover a latent ability and love of racing. A stronger attraction of recreational riders to the club would ultimately improve our racing teams if we are able to help novice toward developing their skills and understanding of the many facets of cycling. For this reason the DHSMTB has planned to enact new initiatives in the coming year and to continuously improve our systems for attracting and welcoming members. This includes more deliberate advertising, developing club ambassadors, promoting our organization by goodwill and word of mouth, a more approachable meeting atmosphere, offering regular group rides at a casual pace, and more. Ideas and action are essential to achieving growth and we welcome help. One of the biggest projects we’re working on is starting a foundation to recycle bikes for the poor in the local community. It will be challenging to attract novice riders and we do not expect the growth to come quickly or easily. A significant effort will be required on the part of all officers and members. The assistance of our sponsors and contributors in the community will also be needed. We look forward to realizing the beginnings of our success, but our greater purpose is to set in motion year after year growth for those who follow.

While many students are paying a team fee and paying for their jerseys there are many that can’t afford all the dues, or even the cost of a bike. This total amount is far short of full funding for the team. Unlike other school sports, the DHSMTB is self sustained. We need to raise the funds required to run the team on our own. The cost of racing – gas, race fees, hotels, food, clothing, camping fees, repairs, equipment – quickly absorbs our available budget. This situation forces our individual student athletes to carry much of the financial burden. Since many students cannot budget this type of money it is very difficult for members to cover enough expenses to participate. Monetary support helps every student-athlete who wants to participate. Equipment and merchandise help offset the cost incurred to each rider for bicycles, clothing, components, and incidental cycling related items. Services, such as volunteers and professional help, are also extremely helpful for our team.
