April Biography Book Report

1. Read a biography of a famous person. Using index cards, take notes of important facts as you read your book. 2. Begin writing the rough draft of a speech about the life of that person. ** You will need to speak about this person (without reading notes) for two-three minutes at the open house on April 18th. **Remember, your speech must be in the first person.** 3. Get your rough draft approved. Bring the rough draft to school by March 13th. The rough draft may be in the form of neatly written notes on index cards, telling important things you want to say about that person. Please include the following information:  Place and year of birth  Describe important character traits of this person  What is this person known for?  What was their family life like?  When did they die, or are they still alive?  Most interesting thing you learned about this person 4.

Begin practicing your speech. After the rough draft of your speech is approved,

begin practicing your speech at home with your family or friends. Sometime during the week of March 20th, you will be recorded giving half of your speech, (one minute), as practice for the real thing. For the open house, point to pictures on your board as you give your speech, to help you tell the story of your character. Think of items you might bring in to help tell the story, to add to your display.

5. Bring Project board to school on Monday, April 3rd. Your project board must have the following:  pictures or drawings,  a bibliography and  subtitles,  artifacts (An Artifact is anything that will help you tell the story of the life of  a timeline, your character.)  a map

**** You must use the board we provide, so they are all the same size. ** Your bibliography goes on the back of your display board, telling where you got your information. The book title, author, and copyright date must be included, as well as the names of any web sites used for pictures. The boards will be distributed as soon as they arrive. Please bring in $6.00 by February 10th to cover the cost of the board.

6. "Wax Museum" Open House is on Wednesday, April 18th. You will come to

school that night dressed as that person. You will stand frozen at your station until a visitor presses your button. You will need to create a “button” or “buzzer” for the guests to press to make you come alive. When your button is pressed, you will come alive and begin telling all about the life of that person, using your project board to help tell the story. Your speech should last about two-three minutes. *** You will be graded on how well you actually know the person whose biography you presented, as well as the display you created.
