Biomes Study Guide  -A biome is a specific environment that's home to living things suited for that place and climate.  -Annual precipitation and average temperature are characteristics used most often used to identify a specific biome.  -The tundra is a biome which includes a layer of soil that is permanently frozen. It has a limited food supply which makes it difficult for many mammals to live there.  -Deserts have extreme temperatures which make it difficult for animals living there. Because of the high temperatures and less rainfall in the desert, most animals stay in deep burrows during the hottest part of the day. Some animals and plants that live in the desert are lizards, cacti, and snakes.  –The precipitation in the Arctic tundra is similar to precipitation in a desert because they both experience small amounts of precipitation each year. Because of the small amount of rainfall the Arctic tundra, desert and grasslands are unable to support the growth of large trees.  -The taiga biome is NOT found near the equator. Rainforest, grasslands, and desserts are found on or near the equator.

 -The tundra and taiga are different because the tundra has no trees and the taiga has trees.  -The taiga and deciduous forests are similar because they have forests which provide lumber for use in construction.  -The tropical rain forest has the greatest variety of plants and animals. Monkeys are an example of living features and soil is an example of nonliving features of a rain forest. If rain forests are cut down, a consequence will be a reduction in the variety of organisms living on Earth  -The American grasslands are home to animals such as bison, prairie dogs, and rabbits.  -Deciduous forests are home to animals such as deer, black bears, and a squirrels.  -Temperature, salinity, and currents are characteristics of a water ecosystem that determine what type of organisms can survive in it.  -An estuary is different from a pond because it contains a mixture of salt and fresh water.  -Oceans are a type of water ecosystem with very deep saltwater, very cold temperatures at the bottom layer, and rough currents. Tuna live in an ocean ecosystem because tuna are adapted to live in the saltwater.
