Blinky Lights Lite Activity This activity is to be completed on a separate piece of paper not in your lab notebook Background: “Blinky Lights” are actually Inova Microlights that turn on and off 100 or 200 times a second when set to “dim.” This allows motion to be captured in a darkened room with prolonged exposure times. You and your group will complete specific actions and have it captured by a camera. After all the class pictures are captured, they will be made available for you to view. Answer the questions in complete sentences and clearly explain yourself for each. Procedure: 1. For all motions, the Blinky Light should be set to “dim.” Press the light once for the light to be on constantly, a second time for “dim” and a third for a 1 per second blink. The “dim” function actually turns on and off 100 or 200 times a second. 2. You will be capturing pictures using the teacher’s camera or your own personal one. In either case the flash should be turned off. If possible, the shutter should be open for an extended period of time (a longer exposure). When a camera has a longer exposure it collects light for that period of time and your image can be “washed out” if the room is not darkened. 3. With your group create examples of each of these motions with the Blinky Lights: a. constant speed, b. positive acceleration, c. negative acceleration. The lights can be on objects or attached to people using easy-to-remove tape. 4. You may create any additional motion you like with the Blinky Lights. 5. Please share any pictures you collect by emailing your teacher as soon as possible. Questions: 1. When viewing your pictures afterwards or those from another group, how could you determine which were examples of constant speed? 2. How did the positive and negative acceleration examples differ? 3. How were the positive and negative acceleration examples similar? 4. Describe the additional motion you created in step #4. 5. Refer to the picture at right, if this were created with Blinky Lights describe the motion. 6. Refering to the picture at the right, how do you think this image could be created with the Blinky Lights? Try to be as specific as possible. 7. You have been able to determine an object’s motion based on pictures created with the Blinky Lights. What property of these lights allowed you to determine an object’s motion?
