Board Books to use with Preschoolers and their Families
The following is a list of board books we regularly use in Quality Storytents and other family literacy programs to scaffold and support parents and preschool children. While there are many other books available in board book format, equally appropriate for preschoolers and their families, these are the books we have found most useful in our specific family and community literacy work. We choose these books to read aloud with or to children for a variety of reasons, ranging from the quality of the illustrations to the appeal of the story or song. One special reason we value many of these books is that they are effective tools for supporting a family where one or both parents may have difficulty with reading. We believe we need to do more than merely encourage parents to borrow books. We need to work hard to ensure they have success reading at home. We know that family storybook reading is a powerful motivator for adult literacy learning, as well as one way families can build their own culture of literacy and ongoing literacy success. In our work, we have adapted the guided reading system set out in Fountas and Pinnell's 1996 book Guided reading: Good first teaching for all children (Fountas & Pinnell, 1996). Where possible, our book list follows their letter-based or Guided Reading Level (GRL) scale, where an “A” counts as the easiest level and a “Z” the most difficult. This scale allows us to offer books of similar difficulty. For example, if we know that a parent or child has had success reading Brown Bear, Brown Bear (GRL: C), we can give that family the opportunity to borrow other “C” level books. In this way, we can provide books that are in a reader’s instructional range (not too hard, not too easy). We listen for parent comments, or ask brief, non-invasive questions, to gauge their satisfaction with each book, and, in turn, offer other levelled books that allow them to build on success. We have chosen to list these books by author.
