Member News Meet Ellen Remmer: Leader in U.S. Philanthropy See an interview with Ellen recorded in December. Ellen Remmer's career has been profoundly influenced by her personal experience with giving. While she was working as a corporate strategic planning consultant, Ellen and her family turned to TPI for strategic planning assistance for the Remmer
Family Foundation, a small, private foundation, which funds research and programs focused on helping at risk pre-adolescent and adolescent girls make good choices in their lives. Ellen saw what a dramatic impact this kind of strategic advice on giving programs and governance structures, along with connections with community financial resources has on the effectiveness of private giving, and decided to make this her life's work. She joined The Philanthropic Initiative, Inc., in Boston in 1993, and is now the organization's President and CEO. She is also a respected author and popular speaker in her field, focusing on family philanthropy, strategic giving and women as donors. Ellen currently serves as a board member of her family's foundation, which supports programs that help disadvantaged girls take charge of their lives, and her family business, EHR Investments. She also serves on the Board of Directors of Associated Grantmakers and on the Board of Visitors of Indiana University’s Center on Philanthropy, and has served as a member of the Council on Foundation’s Family Foundation Committee. Ellen completed a Bachelors of Arts from Wesleyan University in 1975 and an MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College in 1981. She lives in Jamaica Plain with her husband Chris Fox and their two children. Ellen's organization, TPI, is co-host of a conference on giving March 31st to April 1st in Boston, and can provide a 10% discount for L3 members. Full information is here. About the L3 Home Exchange... Our web statistics show that many of our members have been checking out the Home Exchange pages on the website...but few have actually put their homes or vacation properties on the list for exchange. Clearly, all we have to do is DO IT to achieve critical mass and have lots of options for sharing. Please visit the page online. And if there is a barrier we can help with, please contact Jolie Cady at 512.334.4671. Of interest... When your Calendar is a Moral Document is the intriguing title of a talk delivered at this year’s World Economic Forum, in Davos, Switzerland by Reverend Jim Wallis, CEO of Sojourners, the social justice organization. His work has helped drive the change that moved the issue of values to the core of this year’s discussions. Link to video interview, transcript and more. If you haven't discovered the TED talks yet, this is a good place to start. The buzz of the conference was this demo-- from Pattie Maes' lab at MIT, spearheaded by Pranav Mistry -- of a wearable device with a projector that paves the way for profound interaction with our environment.
