Book Bite #3 Sam and Dave Dig a Hole By Mac Barnett Illustrated by Jon Klassen

*Before reading, predict what Sam and Dave might find in the hole. Make a class list. *Sam and Dave were determined to dig until they found “something spectacular.” What are you determined to do? Write about it in your journal. Share with a friend. *Pretend you are the dog in the story. Go on your own digging adventure! How do you know where things are buried? *What would you do if you found a giant jewel underground? In your journal, describe the jewel and tell about your plan to unearth it. Make a map of your entire dig. *Sam and Dave were on a mission. Write a new mission for Sam and Dave. Where will they dig next? What will they find? Share your story with the class. *What if Sam and Dave dug at night? What tools would they need? How might things be different on a night dig? Compare a day dig to a night dig. Which would you rather do? Take a class vote. Graph your answers. *Retell Sam and Dave’s dig using directional words. First they dug down, then they dug across, next… *In history, many important things have been found underground. Research famous digs to find some examples. Choose one or two to share with the class. *Sam and Dave wore hats for digging. Design your own digging hat. *Find a spot outside your school where the class can dig a hole. Everyone takes turns digging. Observe what you see in the hole (rocks? worms?) Fill the hole with a new plant or tree for the school. Snack on animal crackers and chocolate milk.
