LET GO YOUR LEGOS

Your Friendly Neighborhood

CORNER BOOKSTORE A few months ago the Boston Globe had an article about local libraries becoming the new independent bookshop. According to Globe columnist Kathleen Pierce, “It might seem incongruous that people would purchase books in a place where they’re accustomed to borrowing them for free.” Friends has expanded the Ongoing Book Sale from what was once a small cart to twelve shelves opposite the circulation desk. The selection is diverse and constantly changing. On any given day one may find a few beautiful cookbooks, a complete collection of Harry Potter novels, a Red Sox pictorial, popular children and young adult books, a collection of Beatles sheet music, as well as adult best sellers, DVDs and CDs and specialized games. Most items are priced from $1-$3. All the books are in excellent condition and perfect for gifts. So consider the library as Medway’s very own independent bookstore. Are you in need of birthday present for a child or adult? What about a gift for a person hosting a dinner? Think about books perfect for future holiday presents. And don’t forget reading you personally might enjoy. New books are added every few days, so stop by often. And of course, all proceeds go to the library for museum passes, programs and materials.

Friends is looking for gently used or new LEGOs to start a LEGO building club this fall. But we cannot do so until we accumulate enough Legos. So if you have LEGOs that are no longer used, please consider bringing them to the library. You could donate just a handful of loose Legos or complete sets; we'll take them all. Drop them off at the circulation desk or email Diane Busa at [email protected]. The Friends is a 501-3(c ) charity which means your donation is tax deductible. We will need to purchase specific items such as green base plates and containers, so a small cash donation would also be appreciated. Of course we could always use additional volunteers during the building sessions. Friends is very excited to start a club that will meet regularly and offer children a chance to create masterpieces that can be displayed through out the library.

THE BOOKMARK

Medway Library Deserves Great Friends! Do you have… 5 minutes to place a Book Sale yard sign in a strategic place in town? 15 minutes to set up the Cole room for a film? 20 minutes to put up flyers in store windows around town? 30 minutes to help us re-plant the entrance planters? 45 minutes to write a short article for the newsletter? 1 hour to help glue graham crackers on milk cartons for the gingerbread festival? 1 hour any Wednesday to sort books in the book room? 2 hours to volunteer to sell books during our sale? Friends of the Medway Library is committed to making our library great by funding programs and services beyond the library’s operating budget. Last year we were able to donate $20,000 to the library for new books, materials and programs. We also help to buy museum passes that offer discounted or free admission. We sponsor fun programs for children such the Gingerbread Festival, and vacation films such as April’s How to Train your Dragon. We have numerous other initiatives we would like to try but are limited because we have only about a dozen Friends volunteers who are able to actively participate in our fundraisers and programs. Our hopes are that our cooperative efforts will bring more people into the building who will continue to view the library as a warm and inviting educational, informational and cultural environment. If you haven’t renewed your Friends membership, please do so now. Memberships are tax deductible and begin at $10; stop by the library or click on this link. Why become a Friend? You will be able to have first choices of books at the Friends-Only night during our large book sales. You will automatically receive first notice of future events. Most importantly, you will demonstrate your commitment to helping the library continue its services.
