Maths Week!

by Mr. Duncan Millward

Today marks the end of the official Maths Week at TES. The purpose of Maths Week was to celebrate the subject and to promote fun ways to learn about Maths. Maths is all around us and has many practical uses in life. This week all of the children and classes have been exploring around the school, and particularly outside, different maths concepts in fun and engaging ways. We know from research that children need to explore concepts in greater depth and breadth to fully understand them. In different ways this week children have explored number, shape and space, measurement and data handling. Have a look among the photos from classes throughout the school. The children have also taken part in a scavenger hunt around school. They were given a sheet of clues that sent them to different parts of the playground. There was then a Maths question to answer. They then took the first letter from this answer and turned it into a Maths word. Many children in both infants and juniors showed tenacity, perseverance and problem solving to be able to complete the challenge. At an assembly this morning, Mr Gamble for Year 1 and 2, and Mr Millward for Years 3 to 6 shared some of the experiences that the children had during the week. It was also a

time for Mr Millward to share some of the Maths jokes that he has been sent during the week. Here are some of his favourites:

Q. Why are circles so hot? A. They are 360 degrees. From: Ethan Chen, Year 4

Q: Why wasn't the geometry teacher at school? A: Because she sprained her angle!! From: Dannis, Year 2

Q. Why was Six afraid of Seven? A. Because Seven "ate" Nine! From: Annabelle, Year 2 & Andrew, Year 4

...and after all of those jokes who says Maths is no fun!

Maths Workshop

by Mrs. Jenny Bonnalie

Thank you to all the parents that attended our Early Years Mathematics Workshop this week. Ms Julie, Ms Jennie and I enthusiastically discussed the importance of play, experiences and language for children's most effective understanding of mathematical concepts. cepts. We unpicked the Early Learning Goals for Number and Shape, Space and Measure. We demosntrated how this is achieved without any written calculations; with a focus on the process, the 'why' and the 'how', instead of the 'answers' and the 'what'. We hope pe that you can transfer and use these ideas at home to broaden and enrich your children's learning experiences.

Remember that play is not a luxury, a time filler or a reward... but an essential feature of a child's secure mathematical foundations and their ir highest form of research! Our supporting presentation will be posted on the Nursery and Reception blogs. Please don't hesitate to ask us any questions about this, at any time, with the teachers in our Foundation Stage team.

Google for Parents by Mr. Duncan Millward A big thank you to Mel Hall and Dipak Mondal for running the latest BPPTA workshop. The workshop was an introduction to several Google tools that students at school are taught to use during their time at school. All things Google, from email to forms to photos were shared and a lot was packed in to the 3 hours. The workshop was very

interactive ractive and all of the features had been designed by Mel and Dipak in a purposeful task for arranging a birthday party. There was a lot of great feedback from the parents and we are already planning the next one for May.

Forts, Fun and Friendships in Kenting and Tainan! 6TM and 6TM had a wonderful time exploring Kenting and Tainan last week as part of their Adventurous Mind and Spirit topic. This residential trip provided the opportunity for children to consolidate friendships and form new ones, establish their growing independence dependence and show their desire to explore exciting places like the National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium along with Little Bay in Kenting. Coupled with

discovering Taiwan's colourful and interesting past at sites like Anping Fort, Ten-Drum Village ge and Eluanbi Lighthouse this made for an informative and life-changing changing experience for all involved. Just as importantly though it was just real good, honest fun! Thanks to all the students and staff you for the smiles and the memories!

"I really liked the 3D projector in the aquarium; it felt like you were actually in the sea." - Mihir.

"KYAC was a good experience because we could have fun with our friends and get to find out more about people." - Jin

The Year One students performed a spectacular Fairy Tale show on the 15th March. It was very exciting to see so many parents in the audience and it created a real show time atmosphere. Costumes were fantastic and we were transformed into Fairy tale land with th stories, songs and dances. Every student did a perfect job at entertaining the audience

and it was lovely to watch students act with confidence, enthusiasm and most importantly smiling throughout the show! Each class created a fairy tale which ended 'happily ppily ever after'. Congratulations to all participants.

Year 3’s Fantastic Fantasy Show

by Mr. Peter Groom

This week Year 3 performed their Fantastical Fantasy antasy show to the students and their parents. The show was based on the four fantasy stories that the Year 3 children have been reading this term and followed four children on their journey through different fantasy settings. On their journey the characters met talking trees, marching saucepans, an evil Queen and some very hungry sharks before they finally reached the end. All of the children worked extremely hard and acted in each of their parts brilliantly as assisted by some incredible sets, props and costumes created by their parents. A great show demonstrating what can be achieved when the children, parents and teachers work together. Thank you to all that helped!
