Dear Students and Parents/Guardians, The Blue Ridge HS is committed to providing a program of studies which will prepare all students to succeed in achieving their post high school goals. To assist students and parents in making the most appropriate selections, the following items are recommended for careful consideration: 1. Future college, career or workforce goals 2. Personal strengths 3. Willingness to apply effort This Planning Guide describes the high school program of studies available at Blue Ridge. It also contains important information related to graduation requirements and current policies. Please read the Guide carefully and do not hesitate to seek assistance from counselors, teachers and administrators in selecting the best distribution of courses to match your future goals.

Educationally yours, Mr. Matthew J. Nebzydoski, Principal Curriculum and Instruction MS/HS Principal Mr. Peter Supko, Mrs. Paula Finn, Junior/Senior School Counselor

Earning College Credit at Blue Ridge Dual Enrollment Blue Ridge offers dual enrollment opportunities from two local colleges. Students enrolled in this program take honors level and academic electives that meet the same high level of rigor as the equivalent college course. Depending on the course either Keystone College or Lackawanna College will grant college credit for successful completion with a qualifying grade. Participating students pay $100/credit hour, a significant discount from the standard tuition at most colleges and universities. This program may benefit the college-bound student by allowing them to earn up to a year’s worth of credits while still a HS student. Students are advised to contact their prospective college to inquire how the credits will transfer and apply to a chosen degree program.

Advanced Placement at Blue Ridge What is the benefit of AP?

AP Courses Offered at Blue Ridge HS AP English Literature & Composition AP Calculus AB AP Biology AP American Government AP Macroeconomics AP English Language and Composition AP American History AP Statistics AP Physics

The greatest benefit of AP is the experience of taking academic courses in an enriched environment with classmates who, are seeking intellectual challenge, are motivated to learn, and are committed to excellence. The courses offer students opportunities to delve more deeply into content, research in a scholarly fashion, and learn in a college-like inquiry based manner. AP: Most four-year colleges in the United States and colleges in more than 60 other countries give students credit, advanced placement or both on the basis of AP Exam scores. By entering college with AP credits, students will have the time to move into upper level courses, pursue a double-major or study abroad. Students must take the AP exam in order to be eligible for college credit. More information on the Advanced Placement Program can be obtained from the school counseling office or by visiting the website http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/ap/about.html

Blue Ridge High Credit Recovery Program Students who have already taken a course and did not achieve a passing grade are eligible for the PLATO online credit recovery program. Counselors can set up courses provide students with login information. Participants can utilize any computer or internet device to complete the course. Students can also seek the assistance of subject area teachers during flex each day. Upon successful completion of an assigned PLATO course, the failing grade will be changed to a 70 on the student’s permanent transcript. For more information contact your student’s guidance counselor. High School Course Selection Process At the time of course selection for the next school year, students should make a very careful choice of courses in cooperation with parents/guardians, teachers and counselors. A complete listing and description of courses can be found in the course selection handbook. http://www.brsd.org/BRHS/1307-High-School-Course-Selection.html

Scheduling Policy 1. All students will schedule a minimum of 6.99 credits. 2. Students are expected to consult with their parents/guardians in planning their schedule. A parent/guardian signature is required for the proposed schedule of each student. Schedule changes will not occur after the start of the school year. Drop/Add Policy Course selections should be thoughtfully made after adequate discussion with parents/guardians, teachers, and school counselors. Prior successes, failures, individual interests, aptitudes, as well as future college and career plans should be taken into consideration when a student selects courses. Due to the fact that course changes have the potential to cause scheduling and staffing conflicts, all schedule changes must be made prior to the start of the school year. Requests will be honored based on availability. *All schedule changes to core classes (English, math, science, and social studies) require both parent/guardian and administrative approval. A schedule change will not occur unless it meets one or more of the following criteria: 1. The schedule change is requested within the first six-day cycle of the 2016-17 school year. 2. A change in the student’s educational or career plan requires a change of electives for admission to a particular program. 3. A student is in need of meeting credit requirements for graduation. 4. The student wishes to be enrolled in a more rigorous curriculum.

NCAA Academic Standards Division I eligibility  All students entering college must have completed 16 core courses in high school.  Students must earn a minimum required GPA in core courses and a combined SAT or ACT sum score that matches this GPA on a sliding scale, which can be found in the NCAA Eligibility Center Quick Reference Guide (.pdf/270K). Requires Adobe Reader (latest version recommended). Division II eligibility  All students entering college prior to August 1, 2013, must have completed 14 core courses in high school.  All students entering college on or after August 1, 2013, must have completed 16 core courses in high school.  Standards require a minimum GPA of 2.0 and a combined minimum SAT score of 820 or sum ACT score of 68. NCAA core courses definition  An academic course in one or a combination of these areas: English, mathematics, natural/physical science, social science, foreign language, comparative religion or philosophy.  A four-year college preparatory course and a course at or above the high school's regular academic level, for example, an AP® class or outside college course. Remedial courses, or those taught at a slower pace or that cover less content are not admissible. And not all classes that meet high school graduation requirements meet NCAA course work requirements. Help your students check your high school's list of approved core courses on the NCAA Eligibility Center High School Portal. Meeting NCAA admission requirements does not guarantee admission into college — it simply determines whether students may participate in athletics during their freshman year. Students must follow each member college's admission policies and apply directly to that college.
