I have been working with digital technologies (in both and arts and education context) for over twenty years and am interested in the ongoing capacity for innovation and change within the medium. My work is focused on the nexus between traditional and emergent trends in technology and education and the associated development of sound education pedagogy that makes sense of these ever changing mediums. I have worked as an artist, academic, educational consultant and in commercial interactive design and my current research is centred around digital cultures and the use of evolution of digital/social media as a cultural form.
Recent major projects Development and implementation of Generator – http://generator.acmi.net.au. Generator is a creative studio space for teachers and students to explore exemplary work by their peers and industry professionals. My major activity included writing the original projects submission, managing stakeholder relationships with The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development in Victoria, leading the writing and development of the educational context material and assessing its relationships to both state and emerging Australian curriculum imperatives.

With over eighteen years of direct educational practice I have worked at all levels of the education spectrum – Academic, Secondary Teacher, TAFE Lecturer and as an Arts Educator at Australia’s foremost digital culture organisation – ACMI – my focus has been building the capacity of students and editors to engage in rich meaning across diverse subject areas.
La Trobe University When Commencing at La Trobe University in 1994 I was the one of the youngest tenured academics on staff. However over my eight years at La Trobe University I was responsible for significant cultural and programmatic change within the University. In 1994 digital media and online communication methodologies were beginning to become for mainstream and educational institutions were struggling to catch-up. In as Lecturer in charge of Multimedia at La Trobe University I taught extensively both the undergraduate and postgraduate programs leading program design and development in both theoretical and practical disciplines. Key to my success in these roles was the transitional change required to move a traditional fine art intuition from conventional art and pedagogical practice to one that engaged with digital media. This change was require significant program design and change not only for the students but also for fellow academic staff.

>> Brett McLennan Curriculum Vitae << I developed from scratch the Fine Art Multimedia program and later supplemented this program by developing the first Double Degree Visual Art/Computing double degree in the country. Both the programs required me to be the initiator of broad scale cultural change by within my own department and the organisational at large. Within this environment I became a voice for the development of digital (and pedagogical) shifts across the University with input both within my school and broader university forums. These forums included:
Web Working Group Multimedia Working Group www Implementation Group Web Site Communications Group Information Technology Advisory Group Core Business Working Group GIS Working Group International Student Liaison Committee Human Ethics and Research Committee School Board Faculty Board
La Trobe University Core Teaching
Teach/co-ordinate/develop Multimedia Fine Art and Photography (all years) Teach/co-ordinate/develop Art and Visual Culture Teach/co-ordinate/develop Double Degree (Visual Arts/Computing) Teach/co-ordinate Professional Practice Honours, MA and PhD supervision Academic Staff Training
Australian Centre for the Moving Image Leading up to ACMI’s opening at Federation Square September 2002 I had been a engaged by Cinemedia (the combined organisations of ACMI and Film Victoria) as part of the Digital Media Fund Evaluation and Advisory Committee. He group overlooked all funding applications to film Victoria and expressly the commissions for the new Australian Centre for the Moving Image. When the opportunity arose to move from La Trobe to ACMI to was the logical transition and the next career challenge. Over my nearly eight years at ACMI I have been responsible for leader the education in the translation of traditional screen/media literacy into a form that incorporates the production and exhibition processes that underpin much of participatory culture shifts that we see in web 2.0 technologies today. These changes took place at ACMI prior to the web 2.0 revolution reflecting my ability to not only align to current trends but to look forward to the next potential shift. Much of my face to face education work at ACMI relates to the empowerment of teachers using screen and digital technologies to augment their teaching. A demonstrated later in the conferences section of this document I have been an active voice for such engagement. However unlike many technology advocates my practice is tempered by the overriding condition that technology in educating is an amplifier. It amplifies good teaching and sound pedagogical practice; but equally to amplifies poor teaching and poor practice. Much of this work has culminated with ACMI education, and myself in particular, being seen as an authority on digital participation with increased levels of engagement from the Department Education and Early Childhood Developments Innovations and Next Practice Division, a variety of Australian Research Council linkage grants, and commercial organisations seeking program and research input.

I analyse these annual performance figures in excel extracting and modeling trends that inform the development of future budget development and program design. All projected key performance data is forms part of ACMI’s annual bid to governments and a key part of my role is ensuring that the education modeling is accurate robust and defensible.

I have been working with information technology as part of my daily work practice for over twenty years. My technology skills extend beyond the standard ability to use software and applications to incorporate the capacity to both innovate with those too and to provide robust theoretical discussion about how that can impact on the education paradigm. In over the last three years I have worked extensively with web 2.0 tool like NING to develop and promote learning environments for internal staff and stakeholders, external partners and education patrons in global context.
