Research Insight: Blur vs. Oasis – A Musical Rivalry and Cultural Anxiety Brian F. Wright PhD Student in Musicology Research Insight: Blur vs. Oasis – A Musical Rivalry and Cultural Anxiety In the mid-1990s, the British music press became enthralled with the “rivalry” between the bands Blur and Oasis. This infamous feud led to multiple promotions by each band’s record company, culminating on August 14, 1995 with the dual release of Oasis’s “Roll With It” and Blur’s “Country House.” How did this feud translate into immediate UK chart success for both bands? Who won “The Big Chart Showdown,” as NME described it,1 between “Country House” and “Roll With It”? And, ultimately, which band has had longer-lasting chart success? Why Understanding it is Useful The Blur/Oasis feud was one of the last great public feuds in British music history. Yet, it was not simply a media firestorm; it also acted as a stand-in for the real cultural anxieties of British music fans. By comparing data on both bands, we can see how their feud played out in the shortterm as well as which band has remained more popular on the UK charts. Figure 1 shows the chart competition between Blur’s 1994 album Parklife and Oasis’s debut album Definitely Maybe:

Figure 1 - Parklife vs. Definitely Maybe (12 May 1994–11 September 1995)

In Figure 1, we can see that both albums repeatedly rose and fell on the chart and that the competition between them remained fairly even, with neither band having a clear advantage. However (as seen in Figure 2), Blur decisively won “The Big Chart Showdown” of August 14, 1995:

“Country House” and “Roll With It” respectively entered the UK Singles Chart at #1 and #2, and both songs maintained relatively parallel trajectories, with Blur consistently out-placing Oasis through early November. It thus appears that, at the height of the feud, Blur had come out victorious. But, while they may have won this battle, the war was not yet over. Using Data to Gain Further Insights into the Feud Figure 3 details the chart success of Blur’s The Great Escape and Oasis’s (What’s the Story) Morning Glory, the albums that housed “Country House” and “Roll With It”:

Figure 3 - The Great Escape vs. (What's the Story) Morning Glory (14 September 1995-10 February 1997)

As is clear from the graph, Blur were unable to maintain their dominant position. Instead, Morning Glory continually remained in the top 25 for over a year and was never legitimately challenged by The Great Escape. Ultimately, despite Blur’s victory in the “Big Chart Showdown,” Oasis overtook Blur in terms of lasting chart popularity. This is confirmed through a comparison of the long-term success of Parklife and Definitely Maybe (Figure 4).

Figure 4 - Parklife vs. Definitely Maybe - Long-Term (12 May 1994-1 January 2000)

Whereas the competition between the two albums remained relatively even over their first year (Figure 1), Figure 4 illustrates that Definitely Maybe has gone on to have far more enduring success. This is further confirmed by Table 1, which shows that, since the time of its original release, Definitely Maybe has spent a total of 413 weeks in the UK album rankings while Parklife has spent a total of 175.

Elements of the Insight That Would Not Have Been Possible Without the Application of a Data Resource While many may be aware of the outcome of the Blur/Oasis debate, the aforementioned graphs provide an in-depth look into the week-to-week battles between the two bands, visually demonstrating how this public feud played out in both the long- and short-term. In the past, this data would have been collected, sorted, and graphed manually – a daunting task not easily undertaken. Few would even have thought of making the comparison in this way due to the difficulty of accessing the data and putting it into a time series visual format. Academic Rights Press © 2014

Using Chart Data in Humanities Research Chart data is a useful resource in humanities research. It enables students and researchers to investigate sales with the same sort of information that record company executives have at their disposal, allowing them to find new insights in how the commercial results play out. The benefit of the Music ID platform is its ability to quickly, clearly, and easily gather and correlate this kind of precise information within minutes. Researchers can therefore devote their time and energy elsewhere, allowing them, in this case, to investigate additional issues, such as how class tensions or the UK political climate influenced the discourse of the Blur/Oasis feud, and what other music had an impact at this time.
