Taking Care of Your Chromebook Students are responsible for the general care of the Chromeboook they have been issued by the school. A Chromebook that is damaged or fails to work properly must be taken to the media center as soon as possible so that it can be repaired and a loaner district device can be issued to the student. District owned devices should never be taken to an outside computer service for any type of repairs or maintenance. Students should never leave their Chromebook unattended except when locked in their hallway locker. Cases Each student will be issued a work-in case for his/her Chromebook that should be used at all times. Although the cases are reinforced to help protect the device, they are not guaranteed to prevent damage. It remains the student’s responsibility to care for and protect his/her device. Heavy objects should NEVER be placed on top of Chromebooks. Carrying Always transport Chromebooks with care and in District-provided protective cases. Failure to do so may result in disciplinary action. Screen Care The Chromebook screen can be damaged if subjected to heavy objects, rough treatment, certain cleaning solvents and other liquids. The screens are particularly sensitive to damage from excessive pressure.  Do NOT put pressure on the top of a Chromebook when it is closed.  Do NOT store a Chromebook with the screen open.

2015-16

 Only clean the screen with a soft, dry microfiber cloth or anti-static cloth. Using Your Device at School Students are expected to bring fully charged Chromebooks to school EVERY day and will bring their Chromebook to all classes unless specifically advised not to do so by their teachers. If a student does not bring his/her district device to school:  Students may stop in the media center and check out a loaner for the day on a first come first serve basis.  A student borrowing a district device must sign a loaner agreement and will be responsible for any damage to or loss of the issued device.  The media center will document the number of times a loaner is issued to each student for not having his/her own district device at school and will send reports to the main office for those students that have more than one occurrence during the school year.  Not bringing your Chromebook to school may result in disciplinary action.  A student that obtains a loaner will be responsible for returning the borrowed device to the media center by the end of the school day.  If a loaner is not turned in by the end of the school day, the media center will submit a report to the main office, and disciplinary action may be taken.

 Do NOT place anything in the protective case that will press against the cover.  Make sure nothing is on the Chromebook keyboard before closing the lid (pens, pencils, disks, etc.).

Bridging D3 Guide

Devices Being Repaired Loaner devices will be issued to students when they leave their school-issued device with the media center for repairs. A student using a loaner device must sign a loaner agreement and will be responsible for any damage to or loss of the issued device. A device on loan may be taken home when a student’s original device is being repaired. The media center will contact students when their devices are repaired and available to be picked up. Charging Students need to charge their Chromebook at home every evening and bring them to school each day with a full charge. If a student’s district device battery is fully depleted, they may leave it in the media center to be recharged. If there is repeated need to recharge the Chromebook at school, the media center will submit a report to the main office and disciplinary action may be taken. Logging In Students will log into their Chromebooks using their school issued Google Apps for Education account. Students should never share their account passwords with others, unless requested by an administrator. Students may NOT log in with a personal Gmail account. Managing and Saving Your Digital Work The majority of student work will be stored in Internet/Cloud-based applications and can be accessed from any computer with an Internet connection and most mobile Internet devices. Some files may be stored on the Chromebook’s hard drive. The District will not be responsible for the loss of any student work. Students are encouraged to maintain backups of their important work on a portable storage device or by having multiple copies stored in different Internet storage solutions.

2015-16

Printing Students will not be able to print directly from their Chromebook. Because all student work should be stored in an Internet/Cloud application, students will not print directly from their Chromebooks at school. In most cases, students will be able to turn in assignments electronically. If a student needs to print a document from their Google Apps account, they will need to speak to their media specialist or classroom teacher. Sound Sound must be muted at all times unless permission is obtained from a teacher. Headphones may be used at the discretion of teachers. Students should have their own personal set of headphones for sanitary reasons. Backgrounds and Themes Inappropriate media may not be used as Chromebook backgrounds, themes, or avitars. The presence of such media will result in disciplinary action. Using Your Chromebook Outside of School Students are encouraged to use their Chromebooks at home and at other locations outside of school. A WiFi Internet connection will be required for the majority of Chromebook use. However, some applications can be used while not connected to the Internet. Content Filter The District Utilizes an Internet Content Filter that is in compliance with the federally mandated Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA). All Chromebooks, regardless of location (in or out of school) will have all internet activity protected and monitored by the North Branch Area Public Schools. If a website is blocked at school, then it will be blocked at home as well. If an educationally valued website is blocked, students should contact their teacher or media specialist to request the site be unblocked.
