Homestead Act – The lands out west proved to be harsh and unforgiving, long winters killed some of these pioneers, tough soil and backbreaking labor got many, while venomous snakes and wild animals took the rest.

Morrill Act – Realizing the need for innovation and a desire to build upon the dots already seen, the government passed the Morrill Land Grant of 1862, which granted states loyal to the union during the Civil War the right to establish agricultural colleges for research and advancement.

Hatch Act – Furthermore, the government developed the Hatch Act, which functioned to promote new farming techniques and methods.
