Bright Shiny Nickels © 2010 by Candace Moore Twin size 67 ½” X 94½” General InstructionsUse scant ¼” seam allowances (stitching is included in the ¼”) Cut all fabric pieces before sewing to save time Chain sew to save time and thread Press seam allowances as instructed Read the complete pattern before beginning You will need88-5” squares of assorted fabrics (referred to as print squares) 53-5” squares of background fabric 58-5” X 14” strips of background fabric or 174-5” squares sewn together in groups of 3 to make the 5”X14” strip (Do this step before you begin the directions below) Note- If you are buying fabric for the background, you will need 4 yards 6 yards backing fabric 5/8 yard fabric for binding Batting You will make the following blocks-

Blocks are 13 ½” finished. Note- Colors are shown for illustration purposes only. Each colored square represents a print fabric of your choice.

Sewing1. Sew a print square to each side of a background square as shown below. You will need 41 of this unit. Press seams toward print squares.

2. Sew a background square to each side of a print square. You will need 6 of this unit. Press seams toward print square.

3. Sew a 5”X14” background strip to the side of 29 units from step 1. Press seam toward background strip.

4. Sew a second unit from step 1 to the other side of 12 background strips from step 3. Press seam toward background strip. You have completed Block A. It should measure 14”.

Block A 5. Sew a second background 5”X14” strip to the remaining 17 units from step 1. Press seam toward print squares. You have completed Block B. It should measure 14”.

6. Sew 5”X14” background strip to each side of the 6 units from step 2. Press seam toward background strip. You have completed Block C. It should measure 14”.

Block C

7. Sew blocks together in rows alternating Block A and Block B as shown below.

You will need 4 rows like this for Rows 1, 3, 5, 7.

8. Sew blocks together in rows alternating Block B and Block C as shown below.

You will need 3 rows like this for Rows 2, 4, 6. 9. Sew the rows together in order starting with Row 1. The quilt top is now complete! 10. Cut your backing in to 2-3yard pieces and trim your selvages. Sew the new lengths together side by side. Your backing will measure 108” X 84” approximately. 11. Layer your backing, batting and quilt top. Baste the layers together using the method you prefer. 12. Quilt as desired. 13. Cut 8- 2” wide binding strips across the width of the fabric. Or cut the strips the width that you prefer.
