Domino Math by Regina Davis

Teaching Suggestions: In a small group setting, have students choose a domino, copy the dots on the left and right side of the domino onto the paper, translate the dots into numbers and write the 2 numbers as addends in the addition sentence. Students find the sum of the 2 addends by adding the 2 amounts. Another option, would be to pair up your students, and have one student choose the domino. He/she will describe it to his/her partner without showing the domino. See how descriptive students can be….can the student describe accurately where the dots are on the domino to his/her partner? For example, “On the left side there are 5 dots. 2 are on top, one is in the middle, and two are on the bottom.” The partner will have to follow directions to fill in the domino correctly. Students should use the word “addend” to describe the 2 numbers on the domino, and the word “sum” to describe the total amount. I suggest that you go through your domino set and only have available the dominoes that you really want your students to practice during the amount of time available for this small group activity. Happy Teaching!  Regina Davis aka Queen Chaos at Fairy Tales And Fiction By 2
