BUILDING A BETTER WORLD When world peace seems an impossible dream, what part can I play? Is it possible my piece could join together with someone else’s?

Peace by Piece – Building a Better World

“Peace in our time” has become a deservedly dishonourable phrase associated with a compromising response to aggressive bullies. Yet the need to search for peace and learn about the causes of so many conflicts going on in the world remains imperative. The centenary of the beginning of World War 1 this year is a stimulus to us all to redouble our efforts for a truer understanding of what peace entails in terms of human rights, justice, governance, territorial integrity, cultural difference and religious freedom. True religion has a full sense of peace at its heart, but so many evil things have happened supposedly in religion’s name, that many people turn away from any involvement with a religious faith. My hope is that this year’s opportunities in the Summer School programme will provide a real opportunity for people to learn about what makes for peace and how we can understand the part religion can play. Rt Revd Ian Brackley Bishop of Dorking and Commissary Bishop for Guildford

Bishop Ian Brackley and Kauser Akhtar

The Cross and the Crescent: signs of peace in a divided world Monday 7 July 7.45pm – 9.45pm Education Centre Guildford Cathedral Stag Hill, Guildford GU2 7UP Course code: 01/14 Fee: £10

Bishop Ian and Kauser Akhtar will be dialoguing about Christianity and Islam as faiths that promote peace, trying to learn from past mistakes and misunderstandings. They will discuss the role of Christianity and Islam as seeking to bring peace to troubled parts of the world. Religion is often cited as a reason for war and conflict but does that really reflect the nature of Christ’s and Mohammed’s teaching? There will be opportunity for questions and general participation. Rt Revd Ian Brackley is Bishop of Dorking and Commissary Bishop for Guildford. Kauser Akhtar is Surrey Faith Links Adviser in Guildford Diocese and married to the Imam at the Shah Jahan mosque in Woking.

What is the point of praying for peace? Tuesday 8 July 7.45pm – 9.45pm Education Centre Guildford Cathedral Stag Hill, Guildford GU2 7UP Course code: 02/14

Does watching the news reduce you to tears – of anger, of frustration, or of grief? Will it ever change? What is the point of continuing to pray for peace in the world? Can we even envisage such peace, let alone have faith to pray for it? In this session, together we will engage with this theoretically, theologically, practically and creatively. Revd Sarah Hutton is Spiritual Growth Facilitator in the diocese and Curate in the parish of Shere.

Fee: £10

Song and story: God story and our story Wednesday 9 July 7.30pm – 9.45pm Saint Columba’s House Chapel Maybury Hill, Woking GU22 8AB Course code: 03/14 Fee: £12

This year’s ‘big sing’ will involve short accessible, dynamic pieces, ranging from Gospel songs to hymns, from Iona/John Bell compositions to other contemporary examples of song. The story will unfold as we sing songs of • Identity and joy • ‘Holding on’ in hard times and stamina ‘against the odds’ • Hope and forgiveness • Welcome and concern for others • The story of God’s love for God’s world. No previous experience required – come if you are a singer or if you haven’t sung in years. Come if you ‘do church’ or if you haven’t done church for ages. We will learn all the songs ‘by ear’ and handouts will also be available after the session. If you love singing and story and want to explore some of the range of emotion and expressions in this great story of God – we may even include an optional gospel ‘stomp’ here and there – then come along and help fill St Columba’s Chapel with harmony. Geraldine Latty is a musician, worship leader and lecturer. She will be accompanied by her husband Carey Luce on keyboard. See www.geraldinelatty.com

Being at peace with God: exploring the meaning of the cross in the Christian tradition Thursday 10 July 7.45pm – 9.45pm Education Centre Guildford Cathedral Stag Hill, Guildford GU2 7UP Course code: 04/14 Fee: £10

4

In this guided theological seminar we will explore a selection of atonement theories that have emerged throughout the Christian tradition. This overview will recognise that anthropology and social context have influenced the understanding of ‘peace with God’ and the place of the cross and the death of Christ within salvation. Steve will be joined by students from the Local Ministry Programme, who are training to be Licensed Lay Ministers (Readers) and Ordained Local Ministers. Revd Dr Steve Summers is Principal of the Guildford Local Ministry Programme.

Andrew Norman

Sacrament of reconciliation Monday 14 July 10am – 12.30pm Education Centre Guildford Cathedral Stag Hill, Guildford GU2 7UP Course code: 05/14 Fee: £10

Making your confession’ sounds rather Catholic, while ‘sacrament of reconciliation’ may be just mystifying. Inner healing sounds better, and feeling right with God is what all people of faith know they most deeply need. Yet making confession of our sins personally to an ordained minister is truly catholic in that it belongs to all parts of the Church and in all traditions. It is one of God’s gifts for us – a sacrament (living sign) of the unconditional love which seeks to involve us in the divine movement for reconciliation. In this session we shall be clarifying the nature of this practice and exploring the good resources which the Church of England provides. Canon Andrew Norman is Rector of St Nicolas, Guildford.

Lesley Mason

Healing for broken lives Monday 14 July 1.30pm – 5pm HMP Send Ripley Road Woking GU23 7LJ Course code: 06/14 Fee: £12 Limited to 20 places for people age 18+. Applications (including full name, address, email address, date of birth and NI number) must be with the Diocesan office by Friday 20 June in order to meet requirements for security checks in advance. A passport or photo driving licence will be essential for identification on the day. Participants are requested to arrive by 1.20pm to enable the group to be security cleared and registered together.

The Prison Service has three goals: to hold prisoners securely, to reduce the risk of prisoners reoffending and to provide safe, well-ordered establishments that treat prisoners humanely, decently and lawfully. Where does Chaplaincy fit in? Do we expect people to change? Is there hope after a prison sentence? What about the victims of crime? This interactive workshop will encourage debate of these big issues, in the light of Christian principles including: • • • • •

Facing reality Restoration for offenders and victims Forgiveness Living with loss Forging a new life

HMP Send is a training and working prison housing 280 women offenders and offering a range of therapeutic, training and educational opportunities. Revd Lesley Mason is Managing Chaplain (Anglican) at HMP Send.

Andrew Bishop

I will lie down in peace and sleep Monday 14 July 2pm – 4.30pm Education Centre Guildford Cathedral Stag Hill, Guildford GU2 7UP Course code: 07/14 Fee: £10

We spend one third of our lives asleep, yet we rarely think about sleep theologically or spiritually. This session will explore what the Bible says about sleep and how we might articulate a theology of sleep. What does sleep tell us about grace, prayer, our sense of mortality and God’s watchfulness and protection? As a metaphor for our waking lives, how does sleep help in reflecting upon peace, Sabbath and restfulness? Andrew has been reflecting and researching on these questions, in relation to inter-disciplinary research at the University of Surrey, where he is Coordinating Chaplain. It should be a stimulating session, and not requiring caffeine to stay awake! Revd Canon Dr Andrew Bishop is Residentiary Canon at Guildford Cathedral and Anglican Chaplain at University of Surrey.

Nick Walters

Peace in my time: an educationalist reflects Monday 14 July 7.45pm – 9.45pm Education Centre Guildford Cathedral Stag Hill, Guildford GU2 7UP Course code: 08/14 Fee: £10

In dialogue with a discussant, Nick will share theological reflections on experiences of educational initiatives, working in post conflict situations in • • • • • •

Bosnia, with the Muslim community Somaliland, with the Muslim Community Sri Lanka, with the Tamil Hindu community Ireland, in the Republic Poland (and eastern Europe), with a Catholic University in a post-Communist state and in Jerusalem

Not a travelogue, but a conversation in interview format with Canon Dr Julie Gittoes about what an educationalist has experienced about ‘peace in his time’. Revd Nick Walters is director of an educational research consultancy, Inteval, based in Godalming, having previously worked in educational development at Surrey University and in FE chaplaincy.

Who are God’s ‘Chosen People’? Was the Holy land given to the Jews as an exclusive and everlasting possession? Does God have one people or two? Did Jesus fulfil the promises God made to Abraham or were they postponed till now? Will the Temple be rebuilt? Will there be a secret Rapture? What is the relationship between Israel and the Church? If you are looking for answers from the Bible, this seminar is for you. Revd Dr Stephen Sizer is Vicar at Christ Church, Virginia Water and teacher and author on issues for Christians concerning the Middle East. See www.sizers.org

As children of God we are blessed with peace. In the busyness of life it is often difficult to maintain that peace which passes all understanding. Linda and Pam will offer guidance and opportunities for praying in various ways to create inner peace in order to influence our outer world, and for ways of looking at our outer world in order to bring inner peace. Pam Thorogood and Linda Scrivener are members of St Columba’s Pastoral Team and serve as Spiritual Directors in the diocese.

Please bring a packed lunch, drinks provided.

Grant Ashton

Ministry in dark places: conflict zones Tuesday 15 July 2pm – 4.30pm Education Centre Guildford Cathedral Stag Hill, Guildford GU2 7UP Course code: 11/14 Fee: £10

With the centenary of the outbreak of WW1 in mind we explore the way the church brings the light of peace into dark places, asking what peace looks like on and around the battlefield. We ask if there any ‘no go’ areas for the church and highlight some of the reasons why people might think that there are such areas. We look at some historical examples of ministry in dark places and the myths and reality in peoples’ perception of darkness. This will help us to consider some possible responses to darkness and to frame our own response to the call to let our light shine. Revd Grant Ashton has been an Army Chaplain for twenty five years, seeing active service in the Gulf War, Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Kosovo and Iraq.

Chris Grocock

A just war? Tuesday 15 July 7.45pm – 9.45pm Education Centre Guildford Cathedral Stag Hill, Guildford GU2 7UP Course code: 12/14 Fee: £10 Materials will be provided; please bring a pen, paper and a bible.

8

Given the explicit teaching of the Bible about doing no murder, and the sanctity of human life, can any war be ‘just’ from a Christian perspective? During this session we will explore an overview of Christian attitudes to war and warfare over the past 2,000 years, with a particular reference to the development of the ‘just war’ theory by Augustine and Aquinas, and subsequent refinements of the theory since then. Dr Chris Grocock is a Local Licensed Minister (Reader) at St Luke’s, Grayshott.

Matt Freer

Peace of the earth: a ‘forest church’ experience Wednesday 16 July 10.30am – 1pm Garden at Willow Grange Woking Road Guildford GU4 7QS Course code: 13/14 Fee: £10 Tea and coffee will be available in the morning. You are welcome to bring a packed lunch and stay on to eat it in the garden. There will be access to the house for toilet facilities. Please park as directed on arrival at Willow Grange and gather at the front of the house.

The natural world is often a place where we experience feelings of peace and wonder – important sources of spiritual growth for many of us. Yet our relationship with the earth and nature can often be in conflict with that peace. This session will explore our connection with nature and how it can help us thrive and live at peace with all of life. This will be an outdoor event whatever the weather. You will need appropriate clothing and footwear. There will be times when we are sitting still so you will need warm layers, something to sit on and an attitude of experimentation, playfulness and readiness to participate with nature. Matt Freer is the Environment Officer for the Diocese of Oxford and co-ordinates the Oxford Forest Church group. See www.oxford.anglican.org/mission-ministry/ environment/resources/forest-church/

Sarah Middleton

Painting peace: what does it look like? Wednesday 16 July 7.45pm – 9.45pm Education Centre Guildford Cathedral Stag Hill, Guildford GU2 7UP Course code: 14/14 Fee: £12

The Methodist Modern Art Collection travels widely to galleries, schools and cathedrals (some works came to Guildford in 2008). Famous names from the British art world are represented, such as Graham Sutherland and Norman Adams. Works by John Muafangejo from Namibia and Indian Christian, Jyoti Sahi, are among the more recent acquisitions. Sarah will articulate the vision of the collectors and draw on her MA research into the value of the Collection in multi-cultural Britain today. Using slides of the paintings, she will facilitate conversation around some of the works that express concern for justice and peace. The style of the session will be discursive and devotional. Sarah Middleton is a trustee of the Methodist Modern Art Collection, a Methodist Local Preacher and, until recently, a Regional Learning and Development Officer for the Methodist Church. See www.methodist.org.uk/artcollection

Julie Gittoes

Broken bread and wine outpoured: the Eucharist as a sign of peace Thursday 17 July 10am – 12.30pm Education Centre Guildford Cathedral Stag Hill, Guildford GU2 7UP Course code: 15/14 Fee: £10

This session will explore the Eucharist as a place of peace and its impact on the fellowship and mission of the Church. When we gather to celebrate communion we are reminded that Christ is our peace. As we receive this gift, we are called to share peace with others. We have become familiar with greeting friends, family and strangers in peace, often with a handshake. What are the origins of this sign and what does it mean for us? At the conclusion of our worship, we are sent into the world, often in response to the command ‘go in peace to love and serve the Lord’. How does sharing in broken bread and wine form us as the body of Christ and equip us to live as disciples in the world? Revd Canon Dr Julie Gittoes is a Residentiary Canon at Guildford Cathedral, with special responsibility for education.

Bryony Davis

Prisons, peace and potential Thursday 17 July 1pm – 4pm HMP Bronzefield Woodthorpe Road, Ashford Middlesex TW15 3JZ Course code: 16/14 Fee: £12 Limited to 12 people aged 18+. Applications (including full name, address, email address, date of birth and NI number) must be with the Diocesan Office by Friday 20 June in order to complete a security clearance in advance. A passport or photo driving licence will be essential for prison identification on the day. Participants are advised to arrive at the prison before 1.00pm, to enable everyone to be security cleared and registered together.

10

Can prisons be places of forgiveness and hope? How can they contribute towards a more peaceful society? What might peace mean for victims? HMP Bronzefield is situated in Ashford, Middlesex, just over the border in the London Diocese. It is a modern, privately run women’s prison, housing 520 remand and sentenced prisoners. This session gives the opportunity to hear about the experiences of prisoners, the role of chaplaincy, and to think about how churches can help ex-offenders to build peace-filled lives. Revd Bryony is Anglican Chaplain at HMP / YOI Bronzefield.

Stephen Sizer

Kairos: a Christian response to the Middle East conflict Thursday 17 July 2pm – 4.30pm Education Centre Guildford Cathedral Stag Hill, Guildford GU2 7UP Course code: 17/14 Fee: £10

The Arab Israeli conflict has been the longest running dispute in the hands of the United Nations. It is the most dangerous military conflict, the most controversial media story, the most destructive religious issue and sadly it is being perpetuated by misguided Christians. Kairos is a response from the indigenous Church in Palestine and is a call to Christians worldwide to become better informed, show solidarity and engage peacefully in the work of justice, peace and reconciliation. Revd Dr Stephen Sizer is Vicar at Christ Church, Virginia Water and teacher and author on issues for Christians concerning the Middle East. See www.sizers.org

Suzette Jones

Finding peace with ourselves: the art of mindfulness Friday 18 July 10am – 12.30pm Education Centre Guildford Cathedral Stag Hill, Guildford GU2 7UP Course code: 18/14 Fee: £10

Mindfulness simply means paying attention to our experience in the present moment, on purpose and with an attitude of kindly acceptance. A natural human capacity, evidence shows that mindfulness practice can help us to feel awake, aware and ‘present’ for more of our lives. It helps us to choose our actions more wisely, to let go of worries and habits which no longer work for us, and to boost our well-being and compassion for ourselves and others. Attendees will be invited to ‘dip into the present moment’ with simple exercises to focus attention. Suzette Jones is the Open to All, Health & Wellbeing Adviser at the diocese and a Registered Nurse. For over thirty years she has been working with a wide variety of people who have physical and/or mental health problems, in hospital and community settings. Mindfulness and mindfulness meditation not only aids her work but enables many in pain to live fuller lives.

The gift and sacrifice of music from the trenches Friday 18 July 2pm – 4.30pm Education Centre Guildford Cathedral Stag Hill, Guildford GU2 7UP Course code: 19/14 Fee: £10

Roy’s session will be illustrated with recorded musical examples of British Composers who wrote from the trenches. Although some survived and went on to flourish as mature composers, many of these young men lost their lives during the Great War. Participants are invited to experience some of the wonderful music that has survived from this time, as well as come to appreciate the great loss which the world of British music in the twentieth century suffered, as it was robbed of the contributions which they would have made if some of these young men had lived to maturity. Revd Roy Woodhams is Rector at St Nicholas, Cranleigh and Chair of the Guildford Area Committee of the Royal School of Church Music.

Russ Parker

Healing the wounds of history Friday 18 July 7.45pm – 9.45pm Education Centre Guildford Cathedral Stag Hill, Guildford GU2 7UP Course code: 20/14 Fee: £10

12

In this centenary anniversary of WW1 the media are reminding us of the colossal impact of war upon our society and the way issues of loss and grief have an enduring influence upon us. In this session we have an opportunity to explore how the legacies of war and conflict still influence how we live our lives and shape the way we relate to others and as societies. We will also look at some of the resources we have to bring reconciliation and resolution to our own wounded relationships. Revd Russ Parker was until 2013 director of the Acorn Christian Healing Foundation and is now Acorn’s international ambassador, responsible for developing partnerships, listening and reconciliation overseas. As a freelance educator, he continues to travel extensively lecturing and teaching on listening, healing, forgiveness and reconciliation, often in situations of historical forgiveness. He is also an author of books on healing, dreams, failure and forgiveness.

Phil Parker

Peace in a world of conflict: a bible overview Monday 21 July 7.45pm – 9.45pm Education Centre Guildford Cathedral Stag Hill, Guildford GU2 7UP Course code: 21/14 Fee: £10

We live in a world experiencing conflict at every level, where it is hard to make and maintain peace. Every day the news brings stories of broken relationships, strife-ridden communities and warring nations. How can they be restored to peace? With reference to a grand sweep through the whole Bible, Phil proposes that to belong in a committed and relational way to an ordinary local church may be the most significant thing you do in your life to bring peace. The bible story can be told in a way that highlights the themes of conflict and peace. We begin in the garden in Eden, where peace is defined but then shattered, and pause at Babel to see a world in conflict vividly pictured. We then fast-forward to Sinai where God’s people, under God’s spoken word, foreshadow peace restored. Jerusalem then follows as a powerful symbol of a world at peace. We move then to Babylon – God’s people in exile and in conflict once more. But the central event of human history is still to come – Golgotha where, paradoxically, despite the greatest conflict ever, real peace is made possible. Pentecost demonstrates that this peace extends to people from all nations and the local church the place where, despite being ‘east of Eden’, peace can be found. Finally, we end our story with the New Creation, where a world in conflict is finally at peace, to the glory of God. Revd Phil Parker is Priest-in-Charge at St Andrew’s, Frimley Green and Mytchett.

Summer School is open to all If you haven’t been before – do come and join us! 13

Marina Cantacuzino

Finding the gift in the wound: what does it take to forgive? Tuesday 22 July 7.45pm – 9.45pm Education Centre Guildford Cathedral Stag Hill, Guildford GU2 7UP Course code: 22/14 Fee: £10

Marina will be introducing and using the newly created Forgiveness Toolbox as a powerful resource for learning. This resource examines the process and attributes connected with forgiveness by drawing on the journeys of people who have shared their stories with The Forgiveness Project, over its ten year history. It reinforces the notion that forgiveness is a skill that can be learnt in order to transform the impact of harm and hurt. These skills are also accessible and relevant to everyday life, so that anyone can learn the various aspects of forgiveness, for the benefit of our individual and community lives. Marina Cantacuzino is Founding Director of The Forgiveness Project which resulted from her body of work as a journalist, collecting stories of the experience of atrocities and terrorism that had turned away from vengeance. The project promotes alternatives to violence and revenge, as illustrated by its celebrated F Word exhibition. See www.theforgivenessproject.com and www.theforgivenesstoolbox.com/

Paul Bryer

Jesus, Prince of Peace: christological acrobatics? Wednesday 23 July 7.45pm – 9.45pm Education Centre Guildford Cathedral Stag Hill, Guildford GU2 7UP Course code: 23/14 Fee: £10

Jesus, red with his own blood riding into battle and winning the final victory, wrapping all things up at the end of time (Revelation 19:11-21): How does this picture accord with our understanding of Jesus as ‘Prince of Peace’ in Isaiah 9:5? Jesus boldly stating that he had not come to bring peace (Luke 12:51): How does this square up with his call for us to be peacemakers in Matthew 5:9? Give up? Paul seems to! He speaks of a peace that passes all understanding guarding our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7). In this interactive, biblically based seminar we dare to explore an understanding of Jesus Prince of Peace. Venerable Paul Bryer is Archdeacon of Dorking in the diocese of Guildford

Wes Sutton

Facing conflict to find reconciliation and growth Thursday 24 July 7.45pm – 9.45pm Education Centre Guildford Cathedral Stag Hill, Guildford GU2 7UP Course code: 24/14 Fee: £10

Many Christians regard conflict as intrinsically unspiritual and to be avoided at all costs – with the result we either hide from it or handle it badly. Wes will explore the process by which individuals and church communities can understand what is happening in times of conflict, and find appropriate and biblical mechanisms of handling ‘difference’ before it becomes destructive. Knowing how conflict is formed and can be transformed means that not only is the ‘issue’ resolved but relationships are deepened, which is the essence of reconciliation and a contribution to growing a healthy church. If there’s an elephant in your room, learn how to tackle it before it tramples you! Revd Wes Sutton is Director of Acorn Christian Healing Foundation in Bordon, Hampshire. See www.acornchristian.org
