Have you been wonderlng

Just WHY your April and then the May Bulletlns were a btt

late in arrivlng? The edltor has to take the blame for the delay wlth'the Aprll lssue. We declded to delay publlcaUon so that we could cover the acUvities at the SARRC/SARRC races at Rockhgham the flrst weekend ttrat month. We dtd not anticlpate that the prlnter would be swamped by higber-paylng J obs for the annual Furniture Mart and thls delayed the April issue even further. The May issue got to the prlnter's ln plenty of time for arrlval about the seventh to tenth of the month, but without noUfidng anyone else, the RE told the printer to delay malli:rg for a week. The Bulletln edltor ls still awaiting the RE's columns for the June lssue, so thls wlll be a short Bulletln. Along these same llnes, tf any of you have done anythlng worthy of note, please drop the edltor a postcard at hls address (on page two). Your submlsslons wtll be prlnted, at least as part of a column dtscusslng our Re$on's members' actlvtUes and accompllshments. Remember, lf you don't tell the rest of the Re$on, nobody wlll know that you won last week.O

A followup to "Deep Do-Do" the Editor

Yes, too few people do too much of the work b: North Carollna Regton. Thts sltuaflon re-

duces the fun for many ln the

Club. Buddy Matthews does what he can urtth the tlme he tras. Kevln Metz as Solo Chalrman ls trylng to take care of a Job, a growlng fanlly, a home, and get a graduate degree. Donna Hutton, Whlt Falrer, Jacque Holland, Phil Hennrtch, Charles Gabrlel, Rlck Cochran, Carol Cooper, and others. have vltal Jobs to do before and durlng every event. Usually they accompltsh all thls with llttle help other than lmmedlate famtlles. . Dld you lo:ow that preparreg the labels for a sln$e Bulletin can absorb an enUre weekend? That ls only one very small part of what lt takes to run thls Reglon on a day-to-day basls. . It might take several weeks' effort to put the pre-race papenvork together for a reglonal race. Nationals are an order of magnltude more compllcated and oqpenslve. In splte of thls, we keep produclng races that almost oreryone can show up for, enJoy, and then go home. For the race committee, the work ls not over until all the results have been malled, the lnsurance paperwork handled, Nafl onal sent coples of everythring, and the trophtes matled. Only then can some of the commlttee relax. The rest are struggltng wlth the next event. Stewards list, Supps, chtefs, lt goes on.

Now, ask yourself, '\trftrat can I do to help someone on the commlttee?'lf you have trouble. volunteer forJust one chore, elther pre-race, race weekend, or post-race. It shouldn't take very muctr Hme, lt certalnly wlll help, and you mtglt ffnd that belng a part of the acdon longer than Just at the track glves you more enJoyment than before. Sort of 'the chase ts half the fun,' syndrome. I lo:ow that I was surprtsed the ffrst race I helped at and saw how much work went on for a couple of weeks after the gates locked behtnd us. All thls work ls part of the enJoyment that some of us get out of SCCA We enJoy helplng drlvers get the opportunity to flail around the track; flaggers stand tn the weather, chastng or dodglng errant cars: scorers cllck their tlmers; scruUneers peek under hoods: reglstrars shuffle papers; and stewards do whatever lt ls that stewards do. It mlght enhance your enJoyment of your bevolvement ln SCCA, and lt would reduce the fmsbadon that some. If you don't llke lt, you can always go back to btrd-watching. SCCA ls based on cooperatlon, ln splte of appearanees sometlmes. lf we all help each other, and make everybody's Jobs easler, everyone wtll have more fun wlth all our races. Remember ..."Have FUN!!'.O

Club Racing ls alive and well, according to the Bulldog. He has just returned from the Double Regional at Roebling, and it has allayed most of his fears about the state of the universe. With almost 2OO cars this was certalnly one of the best attended races he has seen for a long time. He was particularly pleased to see the size of the small-bore field, except he is convinced that they all turned up to spite him because of his last column. Even his paranoia couldn't stop his enjoyment of the racing, though, because F Production on Sunday was an absolutely magnificent motor-car race. He can't remember the last time he saw a really good 4-car battle for the lead between a stegle Production class, and the sight and sound of those cars will stay with htm for a long tlme. He

hopes that thls continues through the remainder of the season.

The big-bore group was wellsupported too, with a surprislngly competitlve group of GTI cars to battle with Ray Thompson's ASR Corvette for the overall lead. It was also the first time the Bulldog had seen Carl Cason's GT2 Mazda RX-7 on the track, an went he has been awaiting for quite some time the black and white colour scheme looksJust as attractive on that car as it did on the Spridget, and the Bulldog is sure that thts car will soon become a familiar stght at the front

tre 6ny weak field, in fact, was the Sports 2OOO/CSR/DSR group. Combined with the fast Formula group on Sunday, they nevertieless had a superb race on their own on Saturday, with a dice for the lead taking place all around the track. Surprisingly, the least interesting race was Saturday's ITS/ITA/ SSGT/SSA competltion, which despite ha','ing around thirLy cars was a complete procession. All this goes to show, the Bulldog pointed out, that one can never tell the quality of a race from the size of the grid. Denver please take note. The one thing above all else that contributed to his state of optimism was, however, the number and quality of the novices. This year's 'crop- is maybe the best overall that the SouthEast has ever seen, and surely the most numerous. What is

The Bulldog Barks more, the Bulldog said, they are staying in racing. Usually by this time of year most of the novices have been weeded out, after running out of their allocation of money, talent, engine parts, ego, and/or balls around the third race. This is definitely not the case this year. These novices are now finding in Club Racing what the diehards have known for a long time: it's fun; it needn't be too expensive, if approached properly; and there's great people and good sportsmen ever5 Vhere to help them along the way. They are choosing all the classes, too. It used to be that the novices came into Improved Touring ("because it's cheap"), Formula

fto, paserhree) Ford ("because I'm going to drive IndyCars"), or GTI ("cos it's sure darn fast"). What happened of course was that they usually soon found that they were in the wrong class ("those open-wheel cars are fantastic"), or spending too much money ('HOW much for a Crossle A-arm?"), or in the wrong sport ("cos it's so darn fast"). Those that stuck with it, though, and maybe traded their IT car for a Formula Ford, or their Formula Ford lbr an IT car, or learnt that Fast Can Be Fun when you learn how to drive properly - those novices have turned into the mainstaty ol'the sport. The future ol'Club Racing depends on bringing novices (Next Column)

tnto the sport, and what ls perhaps more important keeping them in the sport. What the tsulldog thlnks is happeninS now is that the new drivers are taktng advice about what class to drive, and how to go about racing, and are therefore not having to make the mlstakes that often cost them their S-year racing budget. They are asliing for help, and getting it from competitors everjrwhere.'Those HP Sprites are real neat" - "Do you work on engines much?" "Well, I change my oil" - "What about those cars? Aren't they nice? They're called Spec Racers. Irt me introduce you to them. You'll get on well together." Many classes are undergoing a real resurgence, and it's mostly due to drivers nowadays being in the class that suits them. Very frequently, this is one of the Iow-cost low-maintenance classes. Spec Racers are finally taking their niche in Regional Racing, with 3o-car gfids at most events. Formula Vee is really taking off, with a lot of older cars being put back on the track. Improved Touring is of course tl're real success story, taking up two race groups w'i0r 50-60 cars in the category altogether - and there's more diversity now, with the compeUfive Buicks and Alfa Romeos and o[rers adding spice and interest. What really encourages the Bulldog, though, is ihat novices are also racing Production cars. GT cars, and Formula Fords not though some glamourous perception of the class but from an lnformed and very genutne love for the kind of ric'ing they represent. we are now seeing real enthusiasts (even among the novices) in every race group, the sort of people who bring their friencls to races and infect them with the Racing tsug just by being there. This is what racing should be all about, and it is what will take SCCA Club Racing into the Nineties healthier and more exciting than it has ever been belbre.O

National Drivers: You CAN make a difference! Philip Hennrich

Fellow Racer: This year the North/South Carolina Regions are putting on a Drivers'School at NCMS (Rockingham). As you know, new drivers are the life blood of the Club's racing program. Each year or so, th etwo regions get together and put on a drivers' school for beginning drivers. I need your help in putting on this year's Drivers' School. As a compeUtive driver, you have experience and knowledge of how to race. That is very valuable and can be of great help in training good drivers. New drivers, if they are instructed and trained properly, can and do make very good competitors. They also cause fewer problems, on track and off. This is a good opportunity for you to teach your view of racing and maybe change the students'view of racing. You can make a difference.

The school date is June g- lO. The format encompasses track familiarization in street cars, practice sessions when the students drive their own cars around the track, and the all-important practice race starts. Fun races are last and are always worth watching. This year we are going to stress starts and racing for the sport of it. If you want to bring your car for lead/follow that is OK. You must register as an Instructor, fill out a medical, and go through Tech. You must put an 'X' over your car's number. A question sometimes asked 'Can I instruct someone I is: know'?'That is OK, see your group leader or me as Instructor Coordinator. We also try to have you instruct in the sarne group or class that you would normally race in. Students are encouraged to have thetr cars set up for dual tnstruc-

tion so if the student or instructor want to dde, they can. We would like to have a student to teacher ratio of one to one, if at all possible. Think back to when you went through your schools and how much fun it was. Teaching is fun, and by teaching you learn at the same time. You can make a difference. If you can be an instructor give me a call or come down to Rockingham on June 9. Instructors'meeting is going to be at 8:OO AM. We will go over what you need to do or know.
