The Bulletin RE’s Report

July 2006

® The Official Newsletter of the North Carolina Region SCCA

Mail Call! by Mark Senior

It seems like I just finished the June article (probably because I was a little late getting it submitted!) but our ever diligent Newsletter Editor, Bruce Dover has once again reminded me it’s that time, so here goes. In the last article, I reported that we reluctantly had to cancel the June Driver School due to low registration numbers. Canceling this event ended up costing the Region a little over $1,200 but it could have been much worse had we not made this decision. The possibility of future schools was discussed in depth by the NCR Board of Directors (BoD) at their June meeting and it was noted that putting on a Driver School was no longer a requirement for a region to host a National race. Since putting on a school is not required, the BoD decided to put future driver schools on hold until we have a better handle on the need for a school, when to put one on, and where to hold it. We have already received comments indicating that single schools are just not popular compared to double schools like the one put on at Roebling Road each year, that students would prefer schools be held at VIR instead of Rockingham (since that is the track they will likely be racing on), that schools need to be held in the (Continued on page 3)

Hi Mark, In your column in the recent (June) Bulletin, you asked for some input about going to Rockingham. My 2¢ worth is that I would prefer Rockingham to the north or south course at VIR, for the following reasons: 1) Having driven the full course at VIR many times, the fun of the north or south course is vastly diminished. It seems somehow like you have been cheated and you don’t get the wonderful full flavor of VIR. 2) Variety. We haven’t run “The Rock” in 10 or more years, and I’ll wager there are many in the region who have never run it simply because it wasn’t available to us. 3) If we lose Lowe’s, which I keep hearing, this will at least give us one speedway venue which, I think, many in the South identify with and enjoy, at least for 1 or 2 events per year. 4) Cost. What is the price of NCS vs. the north or south course at VIR? Just guessing, but I think it may be the same or less. It would seem to me that it would be a buyers market at NCS, as they have lost so much business. Now don’t get me wrong, I LOVE VIR, but in its full configuration. Just my 2¢ worth. By the way, I was the SRF involved in that horrific shunt at 10 in the SARRC/MARRS in May. Car is currently being repaired. Thanks for listening. West Chapter Notes by Ed Wentz

First, the West Chapter Meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 11 due to the first Tuesday of July falling on the Fourth. I'm sure most of you have other plans for the Fourth of July than to attend a meeting. Meeting will be at our new location, the NASCAR Cafe in Greensboro. Our regular first Tuesday of the month meeting will resume in August. Secondly, is it me, or is it hot? At this writing (June 22) the temperature is in the low 90's. Thirdly, Congrats to Pepe for his win at the June Jam at Lowe's Motor Speedway (Charlotte). And to our Assistant R.E, 'Sexy' Rex Deffenbaugh for his second place finish! Fourthly, this is for those of you who run IT7 or SM (or both). There are currently Spec Tire Rules for these classes in the Southeast Division. There are some who want this overturned, though there was a voting process with an overwhelming majority of votes for the Spec Tire. A vocal minority want the rules repealed. Personally, I believe the Spec Tire Rule is a good idea to help contain escalating racing costs. It also helps to equalize the IT7 and SM classes. However, your opinion may differ. beginning or end of the year, and that schools should be advertised better. The BoD would love to hear your thoughts on the possibility of hosting future schools, so please provide comments to your Chapter coordinator or one of the other Board members. There was also discussion by the BoD regarding what a wonderful track and valuable asset Rockingham is and what it will take to get the Region’s drivers more interested in events there. Since the Region has a full slate of SARRC and ECR races at VIR, we are currently limited to Carolina Cup Pro Series (CCPS), strictly regional races, Time Trials, and PDX type events at Rockingham. Because the track is relatively inexpensive to rent, we can put on regional races at a significant discount to the drivers….if they show up in sufficient numbers! What would the drivers like to see at Rockingham? You tell us what you want, and we will put it on! The Region has had a very busy Solo2 program this past month with

standing room only events taking place at both the Twin Rivers Mall in New Bern and at the New River Air Station in Jacksonville. The New River Air Station event was a true accomplishment as it required careful planning and coordination between the event organizer, Richard Franklin, and the Air Station’s representative, Walt Driver, who’s hard work and support apparently made this event almost seamless, even though it was on a restricted military installation still under heightened security. Both the BoD and I want to thank Richard, Walt Driver (for hosting SCCA), and the rest of the members that have stepped up to run the Solo2 program and make it a great success. There should be a much more detailed report in Richard’s column and elsewhere in this newsletter. The Cape Fear Chapter also had an overwhelmingly successful rally this past month. The “Rickety Bridge Rally” was held in New Bern June 11 and an unprecedented 18 cars showed up to participate! Looks like rallying is alive and well in the NCR! Hopefully there will be an even bigger turnout for the

“Rally in the Piedmont” TSD rally coming up July 15 in the Danville area. If you have never tried a rally, I would highly recommend this one as you will not find a more scenic area for a drive. Coming up on July 29th and 30th will be the Region’s first Performance Driving Experience (PDX) (also known as a High Performance Driving Experience or HPDE) at the North Carolina Speedway (also known as Rockingham or simply “the Rock” for those that recall racing there with the Region a few years back). This event is open both to SCCA members and non-members who wish to find out what it’s like to drive on track at speed with their own cars without the risk of damage that accompanies wheel to wheel racing. Unlike club racing, participants do not have to have a competition license, cars do not have to be race prepared (although race cars are permitted and street cars with T-tops or convertibles have to have a factory hard top or SCCA approved roll bar), and the only safety equipment required is a Snell M 95 helmet or newer. Participants are broken down (Continued on page 5)

into groups based on their level of experience and the performance level of their cars and alternate on-track sessions of 20 to 30 minutes with inclass instruction on high performance driving. In-car instructors provide guidance on following “the racing line” around the track along with insights on driving techniques. Camping will be available at the facility (not sure about power availability yet) and use of the really nice NASCAR garages will be available on a first-come-first-served basis. Entry fees for these types of events are typically close to $300 or more but the Region has agreed to a $200 fee for SCCA members to make the event more accessible to those with limited budgets. However, if we hope to break even at this price, we will need a good turnout so if you have any interest, now is the time to sign up! (This might be a good opportunity for workers to cash in those Worker Credits!) The Region will also need Licensed Club Racers (BMW and Porsche Club licensed drivers are also eligible) to serve as instructors and instructors get free track time in exchange for their efforts. The next club race will be our Region’s one and only National race which takes place August 12-13 at VIR. This year will include a CCPS race as well as a Pro-IT race so there will be opportunities for both National and Regional drivers and plenty of action both days. If you can’t race, we would love for you to come up and help out in one of the specialties. Since this is our Region’s National race, we would love to put our best foot forward and stuff the corner stations with lots of smiling faces! All of the Region’s races are spectator events so if we can’t convince you to work, come up to watch and bring your friends! Plans are well underway for this

year’s Annual Meeting and Awards Banquet which the BoD has decided will once again be held at the Clarion Hotel in Downtown Raleigh. The Banquet Committee has been able to negotiate a deal with them that would keep costs essentially the same as they were for last year. More details to come in future newsletters. Many thanks to Heather Powers, Trish Deffenbaugh, and Barb Gallimore for their continuing efforts. Last but not least, the Mid-year SEDIV meeting is coming up fast and will take place in Atlanta on July 29th. This is the annual planning meeting where rules and schedules for next year’s South East Division events are put together. The agenda includes Summary Reports from the Treasurer, ECR, SARRC, Time Trials, Solo II, Road Rally, Class Review Board, event Scheduling, Executive Steward Report from Fred

Schmucker, the Directors Report from K. P. Jones and a discussion of old and new business including the SEDIV website. If you have any comments, suggestions, or concerns, regarding any of these SEDIV topics, please get them to me or to your Chapter Coordinator so that I may include them for discussion. That’s it for this month. Don’t forget to attend one of the Region’s events either as a participant or a worker. Between the Club Races, Autocrosses, PDX, Rallies and Chapter meetings, the Region has so much to offer. If you have not attended an event recently, you really don’t know what you’re missing.

Triangle Chapter Notes by James Shanks

The June meeting of the Triangle Chapter was rather sparsely attended, due in part to the fact that no e-mail reminders for it were sent out. There were technical problems with the server maintained for us, gratis, by member John Uftring and his wife Natasha Euliss-Uftring, but John is working herd to resolve them, so I’m sure the list will be back up shortly. What’s that? You didn’t know there was a list you could subscribe to so you could get meeting reminders and other news? Well there is, and if you’d like to subscribe and aren’t on the list already, just go to http:// www.euliss-uftring.org/cgi-bin/dada/ mail.cgi/list/triangle and sign up/ It’s just that easy. Thank you, John! Those who attended were entertained before dinner by more of the archival footage of the illustrious racing career of our Chapter Coordinator, Blair “Pepe” Stitt, largely because, as he put it, no one else brought anything else to show and that tape was still in the machine from the last time. It’s not bad. We saw in-car footage from Savannah, Charlotte, and a host of other venues, but a little goes a long way, ya know? So this is a plea from the Chapter scribe and others present, please, somebody show up with new video next time, Wednesday, July 5th, else we shall have to watch re-runs of Pepe’s career again. But even if no new video is forthcoming, rest assured that the next meeting will offer something unique. Pepe convinced (cajoled? conned?) our Assistant RE, Rex Deffenbaugh, to demo his Hans device at the next meeting so that everyone considering the purchase of one could see what it’s all about. Thanks in advance, Rex. In Region news, by now everyone knows that the June driver’s school at Rockingham had to be canceled be-

cause we did not get enough entries to cover the track rental. Maybe next year the turn-out will be better. And speaking of next year, it was announced that the committee planning the annual meeting and awards dinner has booked the Clarion Hotel in downtown Raleigh again and the date has been set for January 13, 2007. In old business, it was reported that the AL Fairer SARRC/ MARRS Challenge had made money, but with only 320 cars in attendance the BoD is considering making the event a two-day, rather than a three-day, affair in 2007. This will make it easier to staff and further reduce expenses, but the decision isn’t final yet, so be sure to let your representative know if you have an opinion either way. And the final tally of funds raised at that race for Angels Among Us, the folks who provide funding for the Brain Tumor Center at Duke, was just over $1200. Way to go, NCR! Under new business, we got a look at a device the region is consider-

ing adopting because of medical privacy issues surrounding driver information and federal HIPAA regulations. It’s a small tag into which an individual inserts a folded-up medical form and then attaches to his or her helmet. The $1 gizmo serves two purposes, one is that the medical info is most likely to stay with the patient in the event of an emergency, and the other is that it is shared with no one except the medical professionals who need it. No one else except the owner has access. If you have an opinion on whether the region should adopt or mandate the use of such a device, be sure to let your elected representative know. Also under new business, it was announced that the upcoming Performance Driving event at Rockingham, July 29-30 would run about $215-$250 as an entry fee for both days (update - $200 for members, $250 for non-members, see ad elsewhere in this newsletter – Ed.). Lots of track time for the buck in either case, but once again, be sure to voice your opinion on this if you have one to share. (Continued on page 7)

Triangle Chapter notes (Continued from page 6)

We ended the meeting by introducing ourselves in round-robin fashion because we had a new member in our midst. Chuck Grantham and his wife joined us for the first time, and we hope to see more of them. Chuck told us he raced IMSA in the 80’s, and remembers competing with Amos Johnson and Dennis Shaw back in their Team Highball days. Chuck’s been running a Porsche Turbo with the PCA lately, and is looking for more track time. Welcome aboard Chuck! We also had a visit from the Chapter’s own budding professional racer, Tom Long. His i-Moto team is experiencing the usual teething problems of a new team trying to get everything to come out right at the same time for bigtime professional endurance racing in the Grand Am series, and he caught another ride in a BMW Z4 at Lime Rock. Tom got the car as high as fourth before turning it over to co-driver Ian Baas, but technical difficulties resulted in them sliding back to thirteenth. Better luck next time, Tom. He was optimistic about his chances of doing better in future events, as well as catching more rides with other teams. He said we should all watch for him when the Grand Am returns to VIR for its 12-hour enduro in September. We’ll see you there, Tom! And I hope we’ll see the rest of the Triangle Chapter members at the next meeting . . . or at the races! West Chapter notes (Continued from page 1)

If you are a participant in the IT7 or SM classes, we need you to state your opinion to the new Divisional Administrator (DA), Toni Creighton. Her email address is: [email protected]. If you would, please copy our R.E. on your email, his email address is: [email protected] Fifthly, our first meeting at our new meeting place, the NASCAR Cafe, went well! I believe everyone that attended was satisfied with the facility. We had Clint Thomas of Hank Thomas Motorsports do a product demonstration on the HANS Device which they now carry in their racing products line. Everyone

also received a goody bag from them. Looking forward to seeing y'all at our next meeting on July 11! Invite a friend to come along.

SCCA Enterprises for Sale TOPEKA, Kan. (June 7, 2006) -- At its May face-to-face meeting, SCCA’s Board of Directors elected to move forward with the potential sale of Sports Car Club of America Inc. subsidiary SCCA Enterprises, which distributes the SCCA Spec Racer, Formula SCCA and SCCA Sports Racer. “The Board came to the decision that we needed to look into a potential sale,” SCCA President and CEO Jim Julow said. “The next logical step was for us to get a third party valuation of what Enterprises might be worth on the open market. A third party recently completed a full evaluation of Enterprises and the Board determined that it was prudent to proceed with the next step in the process of divesting itself of the subsidiary.” The Board established several objectives that had to be accomplished before they would consider selling Enterprises. They were: Any offer to purchase Enterprise must include plans for protecting the interests of existing members involved in racing these cars. This protection plan must include

specifics regarding (but not limited to): production plans and new vehicle price controls, service and parts availability and pricing and Technical and homologation support. Any offer to purchase must clearly delineate the buyer’s plan to respect existing contracts between Enterprises and: current suppliers and employees, existing Customer Service Representatives, corporate sponsors and existing contracts for sales and service/parts deals with current racers. A successful bid should include significant experience in race car production and race series support. Finally, all offers should specify in writing the exact terms of sale for Enterprises, including how much cash, debt and in-kind payment is included in the transaction. All potential buyers need to perform their due diligence and be in a position to forward a sealed bid to Julow no later than August 31, 2006. Should an on-site visit of SCCA Enterprises (Centennial, Colo.) be necessary, it can be arranged through Julow’s office as well. A task force has been formed regarding the sale of SCCA Enterprises consisting of Jim Julow, Jeff Dahnert (SCCA CFO) and Board members Mike Sauce, K P Jones and R J Gordy. The task force has been charged to open all sealed bids submitted by August 31, review and evaluate all offers, and submit recommendations to the SCCA Board of Directors by no later than October 1, 2006.

Attention Dan River area members!!! The Dan River Chapter of the NC Region SCCA is in danger of disappearing due to neglect! We desperately need for someone to step up and take over the Chapter Coordinator duties. As Chapter Coordinator, you would be a fully qualified, voting member of the NC Region Board of Directors! The Chapter Coordinator is usually selected by the members of the Chapter at one of their regular meetings, but in this instance, there are no regular meetings because there hasn’t been anyone willing to step up and take the reigns. The NC Region has 4 active Chapters, all of which have good attendance at their meetings and enthusiastic members interested in what’s going on in the club. Are the members living in the Dan River area any different? I think not! All they need is someone to take a leadership roll in the area and get the Dan River Chapter back on track. Does that sound like something you’d like to do? If so, please contact the Region Executive, Mark Senior and let him know you’re not willing to sit idly by and let the Dan River Chapter slip into oblivion! Contact info is on page 2 along with the other Chapter Coordinators. Hey! There’s another incentive...get your picture in The Bulletin! What could be better?!
