Invitation to support the “Air Quality Objectives” Joint Petition Campaign Dear Sir/Madam, Air pollution is Hong Kong’s biggest public health crisis, killing an average of three people a day. It affects our quality of life, Hong Kong’s reputation as a world class city and causes irreparable harm to the health of all of Hong Kong’s citizens. Recently, Hong Kong’s level of fine particulates (PM2.5) was found to be the eighth worst in the world. However, even in the face of such news, the Government continued to turn a blind eye, and has failed even to update Hong Kong’s 24-year old air quality standards (called Air Quality Objectives). Hong Kong’s current AQOs exceed the World Health Organization’s (WHO) recommended standards by two to four times. While the Government has repeatedly promised to deliver revised AQOs, they have consistently delayed implementation of the new, proposed AQOs for three years now! Clean Air Network (CAN), along with Friends of the Earth, has launched a large-scale joint petition campaign to appeal to all concerned parties and is asking them to sign to show their support. The petition urges the Government to: 1) adopt the WHO’s Air Quality Guidelines as Hong Kong’s own AQOs, in order to adequately protect public health; 2) routinely monitor levels of PM2.5 and publish their findings; 3) set up additional protocols to ensure regular review of air quality policy and the AQOs. All those who sign will have their organization/company name and logo printed in the full-page spread that will be run in the newspaper. We believe our concerted efforts in voicing our dissatisfaction with Hong Kong’s air quality will compel the government to hear our urgent demands and take action!
