Materials: --HERE and THERE signs (color or black and white set), laminate and have them posted in your classroom --Masking Tape or Painter’s Tape --Design sheet (enough copies so that each group has several sheets to work with as they may have to rework their design after the first trial) --Sight Word Sheet: 1 per student....each student in the group should use the sight word sheet that is for their reading level. I made 2 different sets. The first set has my Kindergarten “W” sight words, and the second set has more advanced “W” words. --tape --small cars --cylinder blocks --empty paper towel rolls --empty cylinder containers --butcher paper --yarn --scissors --paper clips --large construction paper Preparation: Post the HERE and THERE signs in your classroom in the 2 areas that you want your students to be able to move their papers (to and from). Clearly mark the 2 areas with masking tape or painter’s tape so that your students know exactly where their sight word sheets should end up. Have materials that you are willing to allow your students to use available and easily accessible. You could make it a little bit more challenging by having materials out that they probably wouldn’t need to use (paper clips, yarn, etc.). Or maybe they will use these materials successfully…who knows?

Activity: In mixed ability groups, have your students brainstorm and come up with a way to move the paper from HERE to THERE with only 1 touch of the hand. Then, have them design their idea on the sheet provided. Have your students practice reading the sight words on the paper. For differentiating instruction, I made two different sight word sheets. The first sight word sheet contains the “W” words from my Kindergarten sight word list. The second sight word sheet contains other “W” words for higher level students. I chose to just use the Kindergarten sight word sheets. I have found that keeping directions simple is better, but I’m giving you the additional harder word lists just in case you’d rather use that. Once your students design their first idea, have them “build” it and see if it works. Have them redesign and rebuild, redesign and rebuild for 3 trials or until they are able to accomplish the goal. For Teachers Eyes ONLY: Different ways to get a paper from here to there. I am sharing my own thoughts. I’m sure you can come up with some other ideas! Do not give your students “the answer”….let them think of different ways themselves. 1. Wad it up and throw it. 2. Make a paper airplane out of it and throw it. 3. Wad it up and kick it like a ball. 4. Tape it around a cylindrical shape and roll it. 5. Wad it up like a ball. Tape one end of butcher paper to the THERE spot and hold the other end of the butcher paper up high in a U shape at the HERE spot (making the butcher paper into a type of funnel). Place the balled up paper up high (where a student is holding it, and release it. 6. Fold it up as many times as you can, tape it up, and then tape it to the top of a toy car. Zoom it over to the THERE spot. Happy Teaching! Regina Davis AKA Queen Chaos
