CSEP Student Staff Positions Summer 2013 The CSEP Resident Assistants (RA) will work with either incoming UCSB freshmen (SIMS) or community college students (Cooke Bridges) participating in a 1-2 week introduction to research and University life program. The primary role of the RA is to provide auxiliary support to the graduate mentors and to act as the main liaison between the program participants and the program directors. The RA must be able to answer questions regarding participant’s lab projects in particular and lower division math/science questions in general. All RA’s are expected to have participated in and presented undergraduate g research. RA’s will use their ppast research/presentation p experiences p to aid SIMS and/or Cooke Bridges participants in constructing and giving a professional, scientific oral presentation. Due to the group nature of the institute, the RA’s communication, mediation and conflict resolution skills will be as important as their scientific proficiency. Secondary RA responsibilities include lead roles in social and recreational activities, general (academic/career) counseling and daily meetings with program directors. It must be stressed that both SIMS and Cooke Bridges are intensive program. RA’s will be living side by side with participants and can expect to be on call 24/7 while working an average of 12 to 15 hours a day. In making selections, priority will be given to those students pursuing a bachelor’s degree in the sciences, engineering or mathematics. Applicants MUST be current, full-time students at UCSB and have a GPA of 3.0 or above. All applicants must have participated in undergraduate research and have experience in giving technical presentations. Students graduating June 2013 are eligible to apply!
