Become a member of Zachary Lane’s 2017-18 CENTURY BOOK CLUB for 1st & 2nd Graders! As children read more they become better readers and enjoy reading more. The goal of the Century Book Club is to motivate students to read by recognizing them for their reading accomplishments. The goal is to read 100 books (or more!) between October 17, 2017 and May 14, 2018. What are the different reading goals that will be recognized?
For every 25 “books” your child reads s/he will receive a certificate signed by Principal Phelps. These certificates/rewards will be given to the teachers by the committee, and will be distributed in their classes on a regular basis.
Students reading 25 books will receive a “25 books read” certificate
Students reading 50 books will receive a “50 books read” certificate and a bookmark
Students reading 75 books will receive a “75 books read” certificate and a pencil
Students reading 100 books will receive a “100 books read” certificate and a free book
Students reading more will continue to be recognized with certificates at the 125, 150 and 175 levels
Students reading 200 books will receive a “200 books read” certificate and an “Outstanding Achievement Award” certificate, which includes a free “Reward” from Lakeshore Learning Store
I will be on the lookout throughout the year for more rewards to offer in addition to the certificates earned by students who read 125 books and beyond! Some of these rewards may include: erasers, reading reward badges, meal coupons at local eateries, etc.
What books qualify for Century Book Club?
Picture books: Quality books at an appropriate skill level. Each picture book counts as one book regardless of the number of pages. (There is no need to record number of pages for picture books.)
Chapter books: Students who read chapter books (Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Babysitters’ Club, etc.) may count a pre-determined number of pages as one book, as follows:
First Grade students, 15 pages from a chapter book = 1 book
Second Grade students, 20 pages from a chapter book = 1 book
What books do not qualify?
Textbooks that are used within your child’s classroom
Comic books
Books that are below the student’s reading level (as determined by you)
How does the program work?
Use the recording sheet on the back side of this form to begin
Fill in the student’s first and last name, teacher’s name, grade, and room number. Also indicate which level you’re recording for
(e.g. 1-25 books, 26-50 books, etc.)
Students and parents are responsible for recording the book titles. When a chapter book is read please write down the number of pages.
Limit each form to 25 books as defined above (see “What books qualify for Century Book Club”)
Send completed forms with your signature to school for your child to give to their teacher
Teachers will hand out the initial Century Book Club form at fall conferences. Additional forms for the next 25 books may be picked up in the school office, printed from the October 18, & 25th Wednesday folders, or found on the Zachary Lane Elementary website beginning 10/17/2017 (Click on the For Parents tab, then click on the Century Book Club in the drop down menu)
Frequently Asked Questions:
Do the books my child reads at school qualify? Yes, any book your child selects to read in or outside of school may be counted.
Is participation in this program mandatory? We hope you will encourage your child to participate and to set personal reading goals for themselves but children should not be forced or pressured to read 100 books.
If I read aloud to my child, does the book qualify? Yes. For children in First Grade who are not yet reading on their own, books you read aloud to them do count towards the goal. Beginning in Second Grade, children are strongly encouraged to read the books him/herself, whether they are read aloud to you or silently. Remember, picture books do qualify.
Do any of the books my child read over the summer qualify? No, you may not record books read prior to the date you receive this letter. This program runs Oct. 17, 2017 through May 14, 2018.
