In addition to the Central Challenge, teams will participate in an Instant Challenge at their tournament. Instant Challenges are team-building activities that must be solved in a short period of time and account for 25% of a team’s overall score at a tournament. For many, the ability to think critically and creatively on one’s feet in a short period of time takes a lot of practice. Our Roadmap resource includes a variety of Instant Challenges to practice. Team Managers are also encouraged to download our Instant Challenge Practice Set, available in the Resource Area on DestinationImagination.org.

CENTRAL CHALLENGE

A. CENTRAL CHALLENGE • 240 POINTS 1. The Intent of the Challenge To solve this Challenge, the team must design, create and present a Show containing an Opening Act and a Headlining Act as part of the Presentation. The team will design and build a Stage on which some or all of the Show will take place. During the Opening Act and/or the Headlining Act, the Stage will move at least 1 team member from 1 location to another. The team must enhance the Opening Act with an Opening Tech Effect and the Headlining Act with a Headlining Tech Effect.

2. Show During the Presentation, the team will present a Show. The Show must include an Opening Act and a Headlining Act. The team may present more than the Opening and Headlining Acts, but only the Opening and Headlining Acts, as described on the Tournament Data Form found at the end of this Challenge, will earn points for D.1-D.4. a. The Show may take place in any time period or location, real or imaginary. There are no restrictions on characters. b. The Opening Act must occur before the Headlining Act. The Headlining Act may begin at any time after the end of the Opening Act. The Opening Act and the Headlining Act may not occur at the same time. On the Tournament Data Form, the team should describe how the Opening and Headlining Acts begin and end. c. The team will earn points for: i. Overall creativity and Theatrical Effect of the Opening Act. (D.1.a) For this Challenge, Theatrical Effect is how the scenery, costumes, makeup, props, script, way of acting, Tech Effects, Stage, and other theatrical elements support the Opening or Headlining Acts. ii. Overall creativity and Theatrical Effect of the Headlining Act. (D.1.b)

3. Stage Every great show needs a stage. Different types of stages can be used to enhance all kinds of shows. The team must design and build a stage on which some or all of the Opening and Headlining Acts will take place. The Stage will also move at least 1 team member from one location to another. a. For this Challenge, a Stage is any team-created and team-provided surface placed on or above the Presentation Area floor. (See C.1 and C.2.) b. At some point during the Opening Act and/or the Headlining Act, the Stage will use Technical Methods to move the full physical weight of at least 1 team member from 1 location to another, in any direction. The team member(s) must be moved far enough so that it is evident and obvious from 25ft (7.6m) away that the team member or team members were moved.

6

2016-17 TECHNICAL CHALLENGE

CENTRAL CHALLENGE

i. For this Challenge, Technical Methods refer to the use of principles in fields such as chemistry, computer science, electricity, hydraulics, mathematics, mechanical engineering, physics, or structural engineering. Other technical fields are also acceptable. ii. On the Tournament Data Form, the team should describe the team member(s) to be moved. The team should also describe how the Appraisers will know when the movement of the team member(s) has started and ended, and in which Act(s) the movement takes place. The team should also describe the Technical Methods used to move the team member(s). c. Technical Methods using less direct team member involvement may earn higher scores for Technical Innovation and Technical Design than methods that have more direct team member involvement. i. For this Challenge, Technical Innovation includes how new or unique, original, or creative the methods are for initiating and/or operating the Stage movement. It includes the originality and/or creativity of the Stage movement. ii. For this Challenge, Technical Design is the result of a plan for carrying out or accomplishing a task. A well-designed Stage movement system shows careful planning and is effective, efficient and reliable. d. The intent of the Challenge is for the team to design and build all parts of the Stage using its own ideas and skills. The team may incorporate commercially produced items, but for scoring, Appraisers will only consider what the team does with the items. e. The team must take every precaution to ensure the safety of the team member(s) being moved by the Stage, and any team members who are on or near it. Appraisers will not allow and will stop any Presentation they feel is unsafe. Please refer to the Rules of the Road for a list of safety regulations. f. The team must take precautions to avoid damage to the floor of the Presentation Site. (See Rules of the Road, Team Challenge Details.) g. The team will earn points for: i. The Stage moving at least 1 team member using Technical Methods. (D.2.a) ii. Technical Innovation of the methods used to move at least 1 team member. (D.2.b) iii. Technical Design of the methods used to move at least 1 team member. (D.2.c) iv. Integration of the movement of the team member(s) into the Opening Act and/or the Headlining Act. (D.2.d) h. The team will earn points for Technical Innovation and Technical Design based on all Technical Methods actually used or attempted during the Presentation to initiate, operate, and/or produce the movement. If the task is not accomplished, the team may still earn points for the Technical Innovation and the Technical Design of the methods used in the attempt to accomplish the task. The team’s score for Technical Design may be affected.

4. Opening Tech Effect In a live show, engineers often use their technical skills and creativity to entertain and excite the audience with special effects. Now, it is your turn! a. At any time during the Opening Act, the team must present a team-created Opening Tech Effect that uses Technical Methods to enhance the Opening Act. On the Tournament Data Form, the team should describe the Opening Tech Effect and the Technical Methods used to produce it.

b. Technical Methods using less direct team member involvement may earn higher scores for Technical Innovation and Technical Design than methods that have more direct team member involvement. c. The intent of the Challenge is for the team to design and build all parts of the Opening Tech Effect using its own ideas and skills. The team may incorporate commercially produced items, but for scoring, Appraisers will only consider what the team does with the items. d. When the Opening Tech Effect is presented, it must be evident and obvious from 25ft (7.62m) away. e. The team will earn points for: i. Completion of the Opening Tech Effect. (D.3.a) ii. Technical Innovation of the Opening Tech Effect. (D.3.b) iii. Technical Design of the Opening Tech Effect. (D.3.c) iv. Integration of the Opening Tech Effect into the Opening Act. (D.3.d) f. The team will earn points for Technical Innovation and Technical Design based on all Technical Methods actually used or attempted during the Presentation to initiate, operate, and/or produce the Opening Tech Effect. If the Opening Tech Effect is not accomplished, the team may still earn points for the Technical Innovation and the Technical Design of the methods used in the attempt to accomplish the Opening Tech Effect. The team’s score for Technical Design may be affected.

5. Headlining Tech Effect In a show, the headlining act is the main event. It has over-the-top effects that wow and entertain the audience. What will you present? a. At any time during the Headlining Act, the team must present a team-created Headlining Tech Effect that uses Technical Methods to enhance the Headlining Act. On the Tournament Data Form, the team should describe the Headlining Tech Effect and the Technical Methods used to produce it. b. The Headlining Tech Effect must be different from the Opening Tech Effect. If the Appraisers believe that the Opening Tech Effect and the Headlining Tech Effect are similar, the team’s scores may be affected. c. Technical Methods using less direct team member involvement may earn higher scores for Technical Innovation and Technical Design than methods that have more direct team member involvement. d. The intent of the Challenge is for the team to design and build all parts of the Headlining Tech Effect using its own ideas and skills. The team may incorporate commercially produced items, but for scoring, Appraisers will only consider what the team does with the items. e. When the Headlining Tech Effect is presented, it must be evident and obvious from 25ft (7.62m) away. f. The team will earn points for: i. Completion of the Headlining Tech Effect. (D.4.a) ii. Technical Innovation of the Headlining Tech Effect. (D.4.b) iii. Technical Design of the Headlining Tech Effect. (D.4.c) iv. Integration of the Headlining Tech Effect into the Headlining Act. g. The team will earn points for Technical Innovation and Technical Design based on all Technical Methods actually used or attempted during the Presentation to initiate, operate, and/or produce the Headlining Tech Effect. If the Headlining Tech-Effect is not accomplished, the team may still earn points for the Technical Innovation and the Technical Design of the methods used in the attempt to accomplish the Headlining Tech-Effect. The score for Technical Design may be affected.

6 . Team Identification Sign The team should provide a free-standing Identification Sign (ID Sign) of approximately 2ft x 3ft (0.6m x 0.9m) displaying the team’s Team Name, Team Number, School/Organization (if different from Team Name), and Level. It cannot be used as a scoring element. See “Team Identification Sign” section in Rules of the Road for further information.

TEAM CHOICE ELEMENTS

B. TEAM CHOICE ELEMENTS • 60 POINTS In addition to the above requirements, the team must present TWO creations called “Team Choice Elements” that show off the team’s interests, skills, areas of strength, and talents. The team may create anything it wishes for Team Choice Elements including props, music, technical gadgets, costumes, physical actions, etc. 1. The team must present both Team Choice Elements as part of the 8-minute Presentation and each Team Choice Element should have a meaningful connection to the team’s Central Challenge solution. Each Team Choice Element should be described briefly on the Tournament Data Form found at the end of this Challenge. 2. A Team Choice Element may not be a specific item that is required in the Central Challenge that is already being evaluated. A Team Choice Element MAY be a single unique PART of a required item, as long as it can be evaluated as a stand-alone item. Both Team Choice Elements may be presented at the same time ONLY IF both can be easily identified and scored separately. Examples of these can be found in Rules of the Road. 3. Each Team Choice Element will be evaluated in three ways: for the creativity and originality of the Team Choice Element, for the quality, workmanship, or effort that is evident and for integration into the Presentation. Evaluation of Team Choice Elements is subjective.

PRESENTATION AREA

C. PRESENTATION AREA 1. Floor Surface: Destination Imagination strongly suggests that the Presentation Area be a large space with a hard floor such as wood, linoleum, concrete or very short-napped carpet. Teams should be prepared to deal with a variety of floor surfaces. 2. Area Size: The minimum required overall size of the Presentation Area is 20ft x 20ft (6.10m x 6.10m), but teams may use any additional space that tournament officials designate as available. The 20ft x 20ft area will not be taped. A minimum ceiling height of 10ft (3.05m) is recommended for this Challenge. 3. Electrical Power: A single 3-prong electrical outlet will be provided at the edge of each Presentation Area for the team’s use.
