2 CHAPTER FIVE. THE APPORTIONMENT ACT

ARTICLE I.

APPORTIONMENT PROCEDURES

SECTION 1. Apportionment Formula §5-1.1.

Permanent Seats.

SECTION 2. Reapportionment and Effective Date §5-1.3.

Review and Reapportionment.

As enumerated by the Constitution of the Student Body, the Student Senate shall be composed of 42 Seats. Eleven of those Seats shall be permanent Seats; five At-Large Seats, five Freshman At-Large seats, and one seat for the Representative of the Resident Student Association, thus leaving 31 seats to be apportioned among the various Colleges of the University.

No later than two weeks prior to the opening of Nominations for Spring General Elections, as enumerated in SGS §6-1.5(a), seats shall be reapportioned based on the formula provided in this Act. This reapportionment shall occur in the form of a Senate Bill, as outlined in the ByLaws of the Student Senate.

§5-1.2.

(a)

Apportioned Seats.

To determine the number of Seats to be apportioned to each College, follow the following steps: (a) Divide the total undergraduate and graduate population of a College into the total enrollment of the University, utilizing headcount enrollment figures from the preceding fall semester. (b) Round the number given in SGS §5-1.2(a) to the nearest five percent. (c) Multiply the number given in SGS §51.2(b) by thirty-one, the number of seats to be apportioned (d) Round the number given in SGS §5-1.2(c) to the nearest whole number, thus determining the number of seats to be allocated to each College (e) The equation is thus given: i. U = Undergraduate College Enrollment ii. G = Graduate College Enrollment iii. TUE = Total University Enrollment iv. (U+G)/(TUE) = x [round x to the nearest 5 percent] v. x(31) = # of seats allotted to the college vi. Example: CLAS: (7524/25063) = 0.30 0.30(31) = 9

§5-1.4. Effective Date of Reapportionment.

(b)

The Spring General Elections following the adoption of reapportionment shall consider the Senate seats as reapportioned. No reapportionment shall affect a Senate currently in session.
