Chapters Ten—Twelve Standards Focus: Stream-of-Consciousness Stream-of-Consciousness writing moves the reader through the muddled and erratic thoughts of a narrator. It relies heavily on the voice of the narrator and leaving the world of reality behind, emphasizes the viewpoint of the character. Salinger uses this technique and mingles Holden’s thoughts with his actions. Holden floods the reader with information that jumps back-and-forth between flashbacks, his opinions, his fears, and his immediate reaction to things. This story is not complete stream-of-consciousness in that the story does not take place solely in Holden’s mind, but is recounted to another person. Therefore, his story is revealed more like conversation in which he withholds facts and interrupts himself.
