Welcome to Integrated Math 1 Readiness! This course is designed to implement the Common Core State Standards using a taskbased approach that leads to skill and efficiency in math by first developing understanding. The Standards of Mathematical Practice are developed consistently throughout the course while students engage in mathematical problem solving, guided by their instructor to achieve proficiency in conceptual understanding as well as procedural fluency. During the class students will be expected to work in teams to develop solutions to a complex task, explain their thinking and give a rationale for their thought process, listen to their classmates, and ask questions to further their understanding. Students will be assigned homework almost every class. Unless otherwise stated, homework is due the following class and should be turned in at the beginning of that next class. If a student ever forgets what was assigned they can check my website for a list of assignments and their due dates. Students will also be responsible for taking notes in class every day. Students notes will be graded. My Website: https://sites.google.com/a/sduhsd.net/mrscharnow/ District Math Support Page: https://sites.google.com/a/sduhsd.net/studentcurriculum/home Grading Policy: 80% Assessment: Tests, Quizzes, and Performance Tasks 20% Coursework: Warmups, Assignments, Notes, Tasks, Exit Tickets, and Other Classwork Progress Reports and Report Cards are delivered electronically in our district and are be available via the Aeries Parent Portal. Phone calls and emails from La Costa Canyon High School will notify families when “official” grades have been posted. Families which do not have access to the Aeries Parent Portal should contact Sherrie Bender at 7604366136, Ext. 6006. Tests * All students should be in class on the day of a test. * Maintain silence during the testing period – do not talk. * Do not cheat – be honest. Cheating on a test will result in a referral and a 0 on the test. The test may not be retaken. * The use of your cell phone or any other electronic device on a test day (even if you are finished with the test) will result in a referral, confiscation of the electronic device, and a 0 on the test. The test may not be retaken. * A final exam is given at the end of each semester. A final may not be retaken. * You may retake any test other than a final. Retakes can only receive up to a 70%. Assignment Policy/Notes * Assignments are due at the beginning of the next class meeting unless otherwise specified * Late assignments will be accepted up until that chapter test. Once a new chapter has begun you cannot turn in assignments from previous chapters (extended time for assignments is built into this procedure). * Any unexcused absence will result in the student receiving a zero for all the work due that day. If a student is suspended they must complete the work they missed. * If a student is absent they have 1 week from their first day back to complete their missing assignments and receive full credit.
Extra Credit: Students can earn up to 20 points extra credit in this course. Opportunities will be announced in class. All extra credit is placed in the Coursework category. Electronic Device Policy * Electronic Devices are permitted in class at appropriate times. * Students are responsible for their own devices. * If a student is found using the device at an inappropriate time or using the device inappropriately (on facebook, instagram, texting, etc.) the device will be confiscated. * Students are not required to bring an electronic device at anytime and students will not receive credit or extra credit for having an electronic device. Class Supplies * Be in class on time and bring the materials you will need to enhance your learning * Binder, Spiral Notebook, Pencil, LooseLeaf Paper, Eraser, your CPM book. * Completed Assignment Expectations * Respect each other and your environment * If you don’t understand please ask for help * Help (do not give the answer) to your classmates if they * No food or drinks in class (water in a clear container have questions with a lid is okay) * Use appropriate language and behavior
* Maintain a clean room by picking up after yourself
* Listen to instructions and follow directions
* Ask questions and have a positive attitude
* Maintain Honesty
* Speak when it is your turn
* Turn in your work on time
* Work neatly and do your own work
* Let me know how I can help improve your learning * Attend tutoring if needed Discipline Policy * Of course, the school’s and the district’s discipline guidelines and rules will be enforced. * Consequences (If you choose to break a rule or not meet the expectations...) st * Electronics with be confiscated after a warning. The 1 time students will get the electronic back at the end of nd class. The 2 time the electronic will be delivered to our assistant principal with a note of “ parent pick up only ”. 1st infraction verbal warning ( phones, iPods, games, and music and video players will be confiscated ) 2nd infraction problemsolving conference with student/seat change 3rd infraction parent contact/teacherheld detention. 4th infraction referral to assistant principal A severe offense or continuous misbehavior will result in the student being referred to the assistant principal immediately and may result in suspension.
Standards for Mathematical Practice: A Guide for Students and Parents
The Standards for Mathematical Practices are central to the Common Core. These practices build fluency and help students become better decisionmakers and problem solvers. The practices reflect the most advanced and innovative thinking on how students should interact with math content. Students and parents will develop skill with these standards by asking some of these questions: Make Sense of Problems and Persevere in Solving Them. · What is the problem that you are solving for? · Can you think of a problem that you recently solved that is similar to this one? · How will you go about solving the problem? (i.e. What’s your plan?) · Are you progressing towards a solution? How do you know? Should you try a different solution plan? · How can you check your solution using a different method? Construct Viable Arguments and Critique the Reasoning of Others. · Can you write or recall an expression or equation to match the problem situation? · What do the numbers or variables in the equation refer to? · What’s the connection among the numbers and variables in the equation? Reason Abstractly and Quantitatively. · Tell me what your answers(s) mean(s) · How do you know that your answer is correct? · If I told you I think the answer should be (a wrong answer), how would you explain to me why I’m wrong? Model with Mathematics. · Do you know a formula or relationship that fits this problem situation? · What’s the connection among the numbers in the problem? · Is your answer reasonable? How do you know? · What do(es) the number(s) in your solution refer to? Use Appropriate Tools Strategically. · What tools could you use to solve this problem? How can each one help you? · Which tool is most useful for this problem? Explain your choice. · Why is this tool (the one selected) better to use than (another tool mentioned)? · Before you solve the problem, can you estimate the solution? Attend to Precision. · What do the symbols that you used mean? · What units of measure are you using (for measurement problems) · Explain to me what (term from the lesson) means. Look For and Make Use of Structure. · What do you notice about the answers to the exercises you’ve just completed? · W hat do different parts of the expression or equation you are using tell you about possible correct answers? Look for and Express Regularity in Repeated Reasoning. · What shortcut can you think of that will always work for these kinds of problems? · What pattern(s) do you see? Can you make a generalization?
