Introduction and Motivation This document describes the CHDK-GPS function of the SX230 extensions in detail. You will learn not only about the CHDK-GPS settings and their functions, but also provide further information and suggest ways on how to deal with the still camera with the addition

functions. Documentation is further based on the CHDK-Manual structure so that relevant information can easily take over from this description in the CHDK manual.

GPS Settings GPS Settings existing GPS functionality greatly expand. The GPS settings provide such functions for navigation, geo-logging a track or geo-tagging of images and much more. The geo-logging is a feature that is constantly in short intervals, GPS coordinates to GPX file on the memory card writes. These GPX files can afterwards be read by third-party tools such as Google Earth and the logged distance are displayed. The GPS Exchange Format (or short: GPX) is a standardized, open and royalty-free data format for storage of geo-data and is based on XML. For further information, pleaseto Wikipedia. refer CHDK also offers functions for geo-tag of an image. One can of course ask the question, why is this good, because every picture anyway Canon assigns a geo-tag when GPS signal is available. But here there are two points where CHDK intervenes: 1 "When GPS signal is available", and 2 "A geo-tag"point. to a Who knows this situation is not: You want to photograph something but also have the geo-tag to the end and waits for the GPS signal. Particularly unpleasant it is when other people have to wait until the photographer took the picture. Therefore CHDK offers the opportunity to make the picture (even without a GPS signal), simply wait a while (until GPS signal is available), then stores the GPS coordinates into a GPX file when GPS signal is available and then turns off the camera2. to point "a geo-tag". Generally provides GPS coordinates to two qualitatively different: One is a 2D coordinate that specifies only a point within a plane and a 3D-coordinate, which still saves the additional height. Anpeilen for the 3D coordinates of the GPS device must be much more satellites, and is thus much more accurate than the 2D coordinate. If one makes for active GPS signal a picture, so does the Canon firmware is the coordinate, which is currently available. With CHDK, you can just set it, which coordinate to be stored.Geotags as waypoints in a GPX file, similar to the Geo-Logging written. A waypoint consists for example of the coordinates (longitude, latitude), from the time of the height, etc. CHDK but offers also the possibility of a pre-made picture, which is equipped with GPS Coordinates For navigation. This example is useful if you do a hike and want to make sure that you find the car again. It makes only brief a picture from the parking lot and may start. Besides, CHDK can also find a compass.

In addition to these major enhancements CHDK offers even smaller gadgets such as the bring-me-home function or a time zone warning, so you do not forget to travel to customize the clock or time zone. These functions are customizable in the General settings.

GPX track record start CHDK offers the possibility of a to login. The Geo-Logging is a feature that writes continuously at short intervals, GPS coordinates to a GPX file on the memory card. This menu item starts the recording of the way. The GPX file is stored on the memory card under sdcard \ GPS \ Logging. With each start, a new GPX file created specifically for this Yymmdd-hh-mm.gpx format. These GPX files can afterwards be read by third-party tools such as Google Earth and the route is displayedlogged when GPX track record start time was selected, the menu item changes to GPX track loggingstops.Alternatively, you can switch the camera off easily. Note:The user is independently responsible for managing GPX files responsible. This means that CHDK creates these files and they also cost space on the SD card. There are some settings for navigation in the menu logging settings.

CHDK writes immediately after creating an image of a waypoint in the GPX file. If no GPS signal is present at the time of writing the waypoint course can only be properly registered for this waypoint time - as a coordinate CHDK contributes 0.0 for a Long and Latitude. Note:CHDK remembers when as a 0,0 coordinate was written, and overwrites the 0.0, when GPS signal is present. Prerequisite: Camera is not turned off. Note:This also works when multiple consecutive images are made for allimages takenthe. ○ 2D(default), that once there is at least a 2-D coordinate, or a waypoint for the images taken in GPX file is written. Default: Off to check the time zone change CHDK offers to consider the possibility, if you look at 7.5 degrees east or west has moved since the last marked position. This is useful so you do not forget to put the camera to the correct time zone. Note:CHDK does not really have time zones, but only checks a fixed value (7.5 °) at a predetermined point. If this is exceeded, this indicates CHDK, if this option is active. The test takes place once every time the camera as soon as it receives a GPS signal. If the time zone is exceeded, a warning will be displayed. [ON / OFF] to test time zone on or off. Default: off site as a nude.timezone Mark CanWith this option you can mark your current location, that it is used as a location for the time zone test. Note:For setting the time zone function, the camera must have a GPS receiver. Note: The location is stored in a GPX file on the SD card under sdcard \ GPS \ TimeZone \ timezone.gpx

tagging settings If GPS is enabled in the camera and also GPS signal is received, the camera automatically saves each image to a geo-tag, and that this is directly from the Canon firmware in the Exif information of image written. Looking at the picture with the appropriate programs such as Picasa, so you can see where this picture was taken. CHDK expands this function still a nice feature because the made CHDK can write each image a geo-tag in a GPX file , where the geo-tag is stored as a waypoint called. The waypoints are grouped together in a common GPX waypoint file per daywaypoint. Here is an example and an explanation to a

Waypoint iswith the XML wpt initiatedtag, with Latitude(lat)and Longitude(lon)of latitude and longitude areheight. elegant is the(Note:Since the height is given as 0.00, this is a 2Dcoordinate), time corresponds to the system time taken when the picture was taken. GPST is the time returned by the GPS receiver when the GPS receiver has delivered the geoday. Furthermore, it is still the name of the stored image(name)and the temperature of the lens(temp). This GPX waypoint files can ultimately integrate with third-party tools such as Google Earth can show graphically where each waypoint on a card is market. shown,in contrast to the CHDK firmware Canon now have another feature that should currently be unique on the If at the time of creating the image is no GPS signal available notes, so the first CHDK information such as time, name and temp, and soon created a GPS signal is available, a complete waypoint entry into the GPX waypoint file. It CHDK waits until either a 2D or 3D coordinate is received. It is based on the time and GPST see how far the point of creating the image and the time of the geo-tags apart. It can be seen in the example above, that the picture was taken at 6:31 clock and 15 seconds (this is currently set system time) and the geo-tag was removed by 4:32 and 7 seconds (this is the time that the GPS . receiver returns and the time zone shift corresponds to 0 So there is a two-hour shift, the geo-tag was removed so the above example, 52 seconds after creating an image, or said another way:.. Could take one image from the outset with an active GPS signal want, so you would have to wait 52 seconds, which can be endless, especially when you take in other people. CHDK does is this advantage that the motion within the time between capturing the image and taking the geo-tagged low or negligible is. Is it very fast, for example, by bike or car is no longer the theory. So you can set exactly how long to wait for the CHDK GPS signal, because at some point it makes no sense to needs and the battery charge is not well. the way, theperiodto wait time and GPST nearly identical when GPS signal is present at the time of recording. The question now islike this again waypoints from the GPX waypoint file in the Exif file . of the picture come this does not CHDK should be mentioned, however at this point, how to do There is a free tool Geosetterit..This assumes just such tasks with Geosetter one first selects the directory where the images are and .. then press CTRL-G can now be selected, what are the GPX waypoint files and that's it will do the rest Geosetter: He now compares the file creation date to the time at the waypoints, if between two not more than one variable. time, is classified Geosetter the two pieces of information. all found information pairs shows Geosetter clearly, and with a confirmation writes Geosetter the geo-tags in the Exif information of images. As already mentioned above, can these geo-tagging function in CHDK correspond tailored to your needs: wait until GPS signal reception [s] Here you can specify the maximum waiting time, the CHDK is waiting for GPS signal reception CHDK turns the camera off after this time.
