W e have su ch talented campers!! There were jugglers, singers, dan cers, judo masters, and so much more... It was an intense 2nd round and 5 boys were sent into the semi-finals for Tuesday! Their only homework was to come back on Tuesday with a super routine!!!! Tuesday brought the SEMI-FINAL round for Ch evra’s Got Talent... after some super performan ces... the FINAL SHOWDOWN was between Y ehuda Weinstein and the heavily favored Reuven Goldberg!! Yehuda pulled off some impressive trick with his skateboard... one that even Avi "Ton y Hawk" Yurowitz couldn’t do... while Reuven put on an amazing ROBOT dan ce routine totally in syn c with the beat! It was epic... so th e judges were cast aside and the winner was to b e deiced by the CAMPERS!!! After loud cheering for both boys... w ell round after round of craz y loud and deafening ch eering... the winner of CHEVRAS GOT TALENT 2014 is... RE UVEN GOLDBERG.

Now how can Wednesday top Tuesday?? 2 WORDS... HUMAN BINGO... that’s right - only

Even th e staff members threw in their own prizes...like EAR BUDS, SLURPEES, (and the very best of all)... STORY TIME with ELI GOLDBERG!!! Rabbi Neiman threw in KOSHER CASTLE and USHY gave away a TRIP TO DOUGIES!! Just as time w as winding down....BIIIINNNGOOO was h eard in the crowd...but it was louder than usual....because somehow there was a 5 way tie! So all 5 boys w ent up and chose all the prizes th ey wanted...AWESOME!!! So it was now Thursday and there w as still NO COLOR WAR!!! So o f course guess what w as announced on Thursday morning???? That’s right - you got it...it was time for ......................PLAYOFFS!!!! That’s right PLAYOFFS for the Junior and Senior Leagues got started!! Guess which teams got the b ye??? Modo?? No! 1

‫בס"ד‬ playoffs b efore!!! What a season!!!!! 3 of th e 4 series ended up being tied 1-1 after 2 games and they will have a sudden death 3rd game coming up! It’s heating up in here!!!! So after the playoff games everyone w as read y fo r the STAFF BASEBALL GAME!!!!! And let me tell you the staff put on a show... sick catch es... balls hit for miles... in the first inning Busani came to the plate with his muscles bulging out...ready to hit a homerun...but on the very first pitch Avi Yurowitz nailed him in the chest...Busani was angry and slowly

could hear them saying th at this was the worst breakout ever!!! But as Ushy likes to say....tooooo bad......its COLOR WAR NOW!!! The teams were announ ced…it was PURIM BLUE and CHANUKA RED!!!! Just as they w ere starting to get into it about COLOR WAR they w ere reminded that it was time for th e GRAND TRIP TO KEANSBURG WATER PARK!!!! Th e day just got better! All the campers h ad a stupendous awesome time at th e water park. Everyon e was soaking wet from all the rides and slides... this was the best trip ever!! We even got back to camp on time!!!! Yeah...if colo r war didn’t start already everyone would have sworn that this was colo r war breakout!!!

On Friday everyone came in their RED and BLUE shirts... But things got off to a crazy start...The BLUE team lost 100 points for not sitting at th eir tables and for talking during announcements. It got worse for the BLUE team during learning groups as more points walked to first... Yurowitz settled down and got the were taken aw ay by th eir Rebb eim. RED was up by a next 7 guys out... but then he saw Busani coming to the whopping 300 points before the STAFF for the teams plate. Busani had some words with Avi and said he were even announced!!! After learning groups the staff would hit was finally announced a homerun...but Yurowitz had the RED Team was led other plans...again he nailed him by Avi Yurowitz and the Suggested Tip Schedule: with a pitch and this BLUE Team was guided time Busani stayed down for a by Yonaton Busani!!! And Rebbeim: $45.00 little before limping to first. As the teams were off to Counselors: $40.00 the inning went on, TRACK and FIELD and Junior Counselor: $25.00 Busani's team took the lead!!! BLUE w as read y to make Swikers: $40.00 And he came up for th e 3rd a come b ack....but after time. This time he got hit again!! some questionable calls b y He ch arged at Yurowitz and the judges...it was RED they w ent at it. The campers were screaming COLOR who continued to roll... th e campers on blue started WAR BREAKOUT... but they were disappointed...and calling th e judges ch eaters and Busani was livid!!! One the game w ent on with Busani’s team leading by 1 run race w as clearly won by BLUE but RED was given th e in the final inning... and 2 outs....Pray hit a single...so victory!!! The RED team was dan cing all over the there was hope...then Yitzi came to the plate and walloped a triple to tie th e game. So with Yitzi on 3rd guess who came to the plate... no...not Yurowitz! It was the Bab e Ben Shimon! He already had 2 homeruns on the day...and this time h e hit one into the gap for th e amazing come-from-behind win!! As Yurowitz and team were celebrating...Busani came and tackled Yurowitz...Ushy tried to stop the fight but he was hurt too and his shirt ripped... finally COLOR WAR BREAKOUT had h appened and COLOR WAR was ready to begin...half th e kids w ere happy that colo r field!!!! After Track and Field RED was up by 550 war was finally h ere....but they were very upset with the points!!! Some BLUE team campers were crying on th e breakout...they wanted a much b etter breakout...you side... they couldn't believe what was h appening!!! So

2

‫בס"ד‬ everyon e went to th e lun chroom for lun ch and team ch eers....and although the BLUE team's ch eer w as better and they were louder... campers overheard th e judges saying how they liked the RED teams cheer better! Wh en Busani heard this he went nuts...he started screaming "YITZI IS A CHEATER.....YITZI IS A CHEATER!!!" So Yitz gave them one more ch an ce to ch eer even louder...ONLY THIS TIME THE CHEER ANNOUNCED COLOR WAR BREAKOUT!!!! That’s right...This whole day was COLOR WAR BREAKOUT!!!! And the BASEBALL FIGHT w as just a FAKEOUT!!! I got all of you!!! HAHAHA!!! Th e BLUE TEAM was thrilled and now it was the red teams turn to get angry!!!!! SORRY GUYS!! HAHAHAHA!!! What an awesome BREAKOUT....who saw this one coming??? NO ONE...NO ONE...NO ONE....it was th e best secret ever kept!!!!!!! After all the sho ck died down....the REAL COLOR WAR w as ready to begin!!! We had some real ch eers and everyon e is now read y fo r the real colo r war on MONDAY!!! HOW’S THAT FOR A BREAK OUT??? TELL ALL YOUR FRIENDS AND THEY WILL BE SOOOOOOOOO JEALOUS OF THIS BREAKOUT!!!! BE ST BREAKOUT IN CAMP HISTORY...AND I MEAN ANY CAMP!!!! I DARE YOU TO FIND A BETTER BREAKOUT!

Rabbi Neiman’s Dvar Torah Many times in life we witness an event occur that is not the way it seems and we conclude that we understand what’s happening. A good example of would be a bystander watching a parent teach a child to walk. The person sees two people holding on to a child that is unable to walk and they then let go. The child takes maybe two steps and the parents laugh and clap! To the person watching, this seems insane! How could parents be so cruel as to let go of their child and then laugh and clap when he falls down? In truth, we know that walking is an integral part of the development of a child. The parents love their child and are only doing this so that he is able to advance. Our father in heaven is the same way with us. He helps us along and then “seemingly” let’s go of our hand and we fall and get hurt. This is not a cruel and unusual punishment for us; rather it is so that we can grow and develop. This is what the Passuk is saying in this week’s Parsha.

Parsha Questions Rabbi Busani 1 Reuven

1. What is the name of this week’s Parsha? (“Eikev) 2. What happens if you listen to Hashem? (You get everything good) 3. What special tefila do we have in this week’s Parsha that we have in Krias Shema? (“vehaya”) 4. What does it talk about? (Listening to Hashem) 5. Why did Bnei Yisroel have to be in the midbar for 40 years? (So that the people that weren’t zoche to go into Eretz Yisroel would pass away)

Rabbi Mass 2 Shimon 1. What does “eikev” mean? (heel and end) 2. What does it mean here? (end) 3. Which name has that word in it and why? (Yaakov, because he was holding onto the heel which is at the end of the leg) 4. Why is the word “eikev” used over here? (Because Hashem is telling us that if we listen to Him, especially with the mitzvos that are small and are trampled and stepped on with our feet, we will merit many berachos) 5. Chazal tell us that in this world there is no reward for mitzvos, rather only in the world to come. Why does the Parsha list the rewards over here? (The Kedushas Levi explains that this is because it isn't a reward, rather it is a form of payment. Just like a worker gets paid for his work, so too we will get paid for "working" for Hashem.) 6. What beracha is said before an aliyah at the Torah and why? (“Asher Bachar Banu”the tiferes Moshe explains that this beracha displays our love and thanks to Hashem for choosing us as a nation and we therefore express this before reading the Torah) 7. E.c. What can we learn from the first words of the Parsha- “Vehaya Eikev Tishmeun”? (That the word “vehaya” is an expression of Simcha. The Ohr HaChaim explains that we will have Simcha if we listen to Hashem)

Rabbi Rawicke 3 Levi 4 Yehuda 1. What Parsha is this week? (“Eikev”) 2. What is the definition of “eikev”? (1. Because - “because you keep the mitzvos you’ll get rewarded 2. Ankle- if you keep even the mitzvos that you step on with your ankle, you’ll get rewarded) 3. What is the story with Rabbi Pinchas Ben Yair? (Two people forgot at his house a bag of 2 measures of wheat grains. They claimed it 7 years later. He showed them the overflowed granaries that came out of the 2 measures) 4. Do you remember something about eating people? (Passuk 16) 5. Do you remember something about the uneven teams that Hashem made? (Passuk 17) 6. What are 2 (out of 7) things that differentiate between a chacham and a goilem? (The chacham doesn’t speak before someone who is greater in wisdom or number and a chacham doesn’t interrupt when someone is talking) Rabbi Sweet 5 Yissachar 6 Zevulun 1. In context the word Eikev means “if”. What can we learn from the specific usage of the word Eikev? (To stress the importance of watching a mitzvah which seems less important than others) 2. “And Hashem will remove all sickness from you”. Why couldn’t Hashem just prevent sickness in the first place? (Chazal say “HaKol Bidei Shamayim Chutz Meitzinim U’Pachim”- all is in the hands of shamayim except negligence with regards to weather changes. Therefore it’s a persons own responsibility to guard himself accordingly. If a person is negligent and does cause a sickness to come upon him, Hashem will remove it) 3. In this week’s Parsha, Rashi notes that Bnei Yisroel walked barefoot in the midbar, yet the passuk in Ki Savo says that ‫נעלך לא בלתה מעלך‬. This seems to clearly imply that they were wearing shoes… So which one was it? (They had shoes in the midbar. The ananei hakavod allowed them to keep the same shoes for 40 years!) 4. How does the Torah view shoes in comparison to other articles of clothing? (Maharal in Gur Aryeh in this week’s parsha says that shoes are nothing but a bare

5

‫בס"ד‬

necessity and are of no importance and in fact they are a degrading article of clothing. Maharshal on the other hand says that out of all of our clothing shoes are the most significant, for shoes are normally made from animal skin and by humans wearing shoes we signify the greatness of man over animal.) 5. Is a person required to buy a separate pair of shoes for shabbos? (According to the Maharal- no because shoes are of no importance and according to the Maharshalyes, because shoes are of great significance) Rabbi Berg 7 Dan "‫" כי תאמר בלבבך רבים הגויים האלה ממני איכה אוכל להורישם לא תירא מהם‬ The Torah is telling us that maybe you will think that the enemy is more numerous than us, how will I conquer them? Do not fear them. The ‫ בעל העקידה‬explains that only if we believe that ‫ בדרך הטבע‬we cannot conquer our enemies but only with the help of Hashem then the Torah tells us “‫ ”לא תירא מהם‬and I will deliver them into your hands. But if we believe that its ‫( כחי ועוצם ידי‬that the victory is due to our strength) then Hashem will not help us. At the end of the War of Independence in Israel some people were discussing the events of the war and its victories with the Brisker Rav. He sensed that they attributed the victories to the bravery of the soldiers and the might of the army. He turned to them and said “You think that the cannons, tanks and planes are the ones who brought about victory. The victory came about because of the Tehillim, prayers and supplications of the scholars and the tzaddikim. They are the ones who won the war.” We spoke with the campers how our tefillos and learning help Eretz Yisroel in one of its greatest hour of need.
