Christmas Program 2013 Ward Choir: “Were you There?” Open on living room scene with couch, Christmas tree etc. Parents of young family sitting on couch, holding scriptures. Dad: Kids, come on! It’s time to read the Nativity for family night! Toddler: Yay! Child 1: Alright! Child 2: Awww!!! Do we have to? Oldest child: Come on! Why don’t you want to read the Christmas story? Child 2: We read the same thing every year! It gets kind of boring! Mom: Boring?! This is the story of our Savior’s birth! Child 2: Yeah, but we always just READ about it! I wish I could have been there to SEE it, so I could know for myself if it is true. Dad: You need to have faith, honey. Child 1: What is faith, daddy? Dad: The scriptures say “faith is not to have a perfect knowledge of things; therefore if ye have faith ye HOPE for things which are not seen, which are true.” (Alma 32:21) Oldest child: Sometimes when I am reading scriptures, I say a little prayer that the spirit will help me to understand and know that the things I am reading are true. Then, I can actually SEE the scripture stories come to life! They play like a movie in my head. It’s AWESOME! Mom: Honey, maybe you could say a silent prayer before we read the Christmas story and ask Heavenly Father to help you see that the things we are reading about are true. Child 2: Okay (reluctantly). (Quietly bows head and folds arms for a short time, then pops head back up and says) AMEN!

Dad: Ok! Let’s get started! Luke 2:1 And it came to pass in those days that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. (passes scriptures to Child 1) Child 1: And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. (Luke 2:3) Mom: And Joseph went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; .. To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. (Luke 2: 4-5) Oldest Child: And so it was, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. (Luke 2:6-7) The family except child 2, freezes before each musical number as though someone hit the pause button.

“The Innkeeper” from “the Forgotten Carols” “Mary’s Lullaby” Child 2: Whoa! Did you guys see that? Mom: What, honey? Child 2: Nevermind. Family reads Luke 2: 8-16 “The Shepherd” from “the Forgotten Carols” Child 2: What about that? You guys saw that, right?! Dad: I think you’re getting tired. Let’s keep reading so we can all get to bed. Family reads Matthew 2:1-12 “We Three Kings” Child 2: Ok! I must be getting tired! Oldest child: Dad, we have been reading in the Bible. Did the people from the Book of Mormon know that Christ was born? Dad: Yes! There was a prophet named Samuel who testified of His coming.

“Samuel Tells of the Baby Jesus” Primary kids Mom: Alright! There is one last scripture we need to read before bed. And it’s one of my favorites. John 3:16 Dad: For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. “He Sent His Son” Primary kids Mom: Alright everyone! Time for bed! (Everyone except Child 2 and Dad hurry off to bed) (Child 2 looks like she is in deep thought) Dad: You alright? Dad: Yes. I am ok. “If I Had Been A Child Then” Child 2 sings with the rest of the family playing bells. During “Silent Night” on the bells, we see Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus. (all musical numbers need to be dressed in clothing appropriate to Bethlehem times) Young children could be dressed in pajamas?
