F ROM THE PASTOR
Meeting Expectations at Christmas It is common to hear that the people of Israel were awaiting with great expectation the coming of the Messiah in the time of Jesus. However, it is said that they missed his identity because He was not what they were expecting. A child born into meagerness, for example. Most of all, we hear that they were very much expecting an earthly liberator who would literally restore the Kingdom of David in an even greater fashion. In this regard, we say He did not meet their expectations as if what He did was somehow less dramatic. This is not true. Jesus did not fall short of their expectations, He infinitely exceeded them. That they did not recognize this fact is a secondary point. All that context would not make for more than interesting history were it not the case that we make the same mistake. The Christmas story is not about an earthly kingdom, but a “spiritual” one, we say. Our Lord himself even said to the Roman governor that his kingdom was not of this earth, so we assume it is less dramatic than what He did establish. The mistake we make is to put the reign of Newborn King into a small box of “spirituality” rather than what it is: a reordering of life that can only come from the fact that He is Emmanuel, “God With Us.” The Church has presented us with the season of Advent to foster reflection on the mystery that God has come among us-- to save us by becoming one of us. It is a dramatic reminder and meditation on the reality that eventually every concern that we have in this life will necessarily fade into insignificance when we are called to meet our Creator. The Birth of Christ, then, is not an event tucked into history or even an event to be tucked into a neat, confined box within our life. It is an opportunity to prepare for the future meeting with Our Lord now by how we welcome him at Christmas into our very lives.
May God richly bless you and your family in this Holy Season!
