L. Summary of My Activities and Future Plans In my work I analyze conceptions of distributive social justice that underlie the basic structure of society. I examine these conceptions mainly by focusing on young people, a population that is educated for participation in civil society. This focus is especially instructive because, in their transition to adulthood, young people take part in the ongoing discourse on justice in society, whether by adhering to existing norms and traditions, by re-interpreting them, or by diverging from them. For this reason, much of my scientific activity focuses on distributive “social justice judgments” (hereafter SJJ), i.e., individuals’ evaluations of the ways different kinds of resources are, or should be, distributed in society. My research on this subject has three main focuses. First, I have developed a theoretical framework that accommodates both structural (culture-blind) and indigenous (culture-bound) approaches to SJJ. Second, I investigate SJJ in the context of other related social issues (e.g., social welfare). Third, I explore the ways in which SJJ are expressed in the realm of education. In order to achieve a more comprehensive understanding of these topics, I have integrated philosophically-oriented and empirically-oriented sociological and social-psychological approaches to justice (Ms 5, 11, 26, 32). Moreover, in all three areas of study, I have adopted a cross-cultural and multimethod perspective, with the aim of distinguishing between universalistic and particularistic 18

aspects of SJJ.

(1) Structural (culture-blind) and indigenous (culture-bound) approaches to SJJ Based on three comprehensive studies, my early academic activities focused on an archetypical study of commonalities of SJJ structures. Applying facet theory, I searched for a unified categorization of the universe of SJJ contents through replications of SJJ configurations across different conditions: countries (Germany and Israel), subsamples (adolescents and adults) and using different measures of SJJ (Ms 2, 3, 15). This mapping allowed me to formulate hypotheses regarding the generalized structural logic of the different facets of SJJ – distribution rules (Ms 2, 3), social resources (Ms 2, 3), sign of outcome (Ms 4) and social context (Ms 8) – as well as the individual styles of SJJ that emerge from them (Ms 7). In later studies, I strove to develop a dynamic dialogue between the above culturally-blind faceted model and indigenous forms of knowledge that could offer new theoretical insights and tools for developing justice theory (Ms 19, 26). In my case, the “natural” context in which to pursue this dialogue is Israeli society, in which I depict the different spheres of distribution – prestige, power, learning opportunities, economy – in different contexts and how they change over time (Ms 6, 9, 16, Ch 5, Ch 6). With the support of an Israel Science Foundation grant (No. 568/09, over the period 2009-2013), my interest in the above dialogue has taken a new direction: namely, the investigation of the local/global binary distinction (Ms 32). Integrating social theory on neoliberal globalization, social justice, and the socio-historical and cultural heritage of Israeli society, I have gauged (with Vanhuysse, who contributed his expertise on political theory) the effect of macro-level globalization (i.e., global sameness) trends on the local Israeli domestic “spheres of justice” as evaluated by a representative sample of secular youth. To the best of my knowledge, this type of macro (global)–micro empirically-oriented study is pioneering. Specifically, I examine the extent to which neoliberal globalization has placed limits on, or even undermined, the local SJJ that characterized Israel during its Zionist hegemonic period, looking at the first three decades of statehood. Assuming that globalization differently affects social groupings, I have also examined (with Resh) the extent to which SSJ are homogeneous or, conversely, vary across generations (students and teachers) and educational sectors (Jewish secular, Jewish religious and Israeli-Arab) (Sub 1). (2) Social justice judgments (SJJ) and related societal issues In this realm of research, I have examined SJJ in the framework of other societal issues. In my 19

earlier work, I examined how SJJ are differently structured by environmental worldviews (Ms 17), issues related to immigration in Israel (with Golden; Ms 14) and social welfare in eight democracies spanning four different models or “worlds” of welfare, including Israel (with Vanhuysse) (Ms 18, 20). In my later studies, which derive from a collaboration with two international projects – International Project on “Crossnational Variations in Distributive Justice Perceptions” (CVDJP) and the International Social Justice Project (ISJP) – I have focused (with Vanhuysse, who contributed his expertise on social policy and the pensions system across East European countries) on a social issue that has risen to the top of the agenda of political philosophers and policy communities, namely, intergenerational justice. Specifically, we examine how university student populations in four types of welfare regimes (including Israel) perceive different aspects of resource transfers from younger to older age groups (Ms 24). A related study examines Israeli Jewish and West German young and adult citizens’ sense of injustice of their country’s prevalent pension system (Ms 27, 30). Finally, my research lately deals with yet another social issue – social exchange and how it is led by various motives, including the justice motive (Ms 23, Ch 8). (3) Conceptions of distributive social justice in the education sphere The two main areas of research described thus far focus on theoretical and empirical aspects of conceptions of social justice. It is also important, however, to study how these conceptions find expression in specific social spheres. Accordingly, I study the particular characteristics of education as a “sphere of justice” (Ms 18, Sub 2). Three review studies stress the ways in which justice conceptions in the wider society are woven into educational practices (e.g., grades and the teacher’s attention) (Ms 10, 17, Ch 3), and a fourth, more general review deals with the topic of ethics in teaching (Ch 4). This area of research also examines how students and teachers in different socio-cultural contexts and disciplines evaluate the justness of different classes of resources that are distributed in schools (Ms 12, 22, 25, Ch 7). Recently, with the aid of the above-mentioned ISF grant, I have carried out a research project with Nura Resh (who is well known for her expertise on the Israeli educational system and interest of justice in education) that revolves around the anticipated relationship between sense of justice (distributive and procedural) among students in schools and their civic attitudes and behaviors (e.g., democratic orientation, social and institutional trust, belonging) (Ms 28, 29, 31). Assuming that these associations are nested in a specific systemic context, which also affects these consequences, our study was carried out among students of the three major educational sectors in Israel: Jewish secular, Jewish religious and Arab. (4) Research Plans 21

I intend to further develop the theoretical framework and extend my empirical study of cultural-blind and cultural-specific aspects of distributive justice. To do so, I will first expand my study on globalization and the ways it affects the SJJ and other related constructs (e.g., citizenship orientations and environmental views) among specific groups and societies and how these processes are mediated by educational practices. Moreover, I have initiated a study (with Golden) that deals with family as a sphere of justice and the ways in which justice judgments are embedded in the family. Finally, in order to examine the generalized patterns of such relationships and possible variations, I intend to tackle these issues from a comparative, cross-national perspective.
