Reading Strategy of Focus

Vocabulary

We have been working on Character development and noticing “Contrasts and Contradictions” in the story, so that is what I had my students look for in this section. They found evidence of where the character was changing, and quoted it.

The students were to find unknown vocabulary words (not just words they couldn’t pronounce, but words that they could not define if pressed.) They then used context clues in the story and tried to come up with a valid definition, citing evidence in their response.

Students wrote a summary of the story in this section. They were to make sure it was only THE MOST important parts.

Since we are also working on theme in class, the students wrote what they thought the theme of the story was and the textual evidence to back it up.
