Problem Background Everyone has become concerned about saving energy to become eco-friendly and to save money. But, in real life, saving energy is not so simple when it can involve identifying problems, finding the right technology, then the vendors, getting finance, implementing solutions, monitoring results and maintenance. Greetude is all about this.
Greetude Energy Private Limited is an Energy Efficiency enabler that helps organizations identify energy inefficiencies, then develop, finance, implement and monitor the energy efficiency solutions, and thus, reducing energy consumption costs. We assist individuals, societies, research organizations, global consortium and businesses in their needs regarding all energy efficiency solutions. We specifically deal in energy efficiency, energy management and renewable energies, and provide an end-to-end solution.
One of the first and most important step in all these projects is Measurement and Verification (M&V). Let’s split it in two parts: 1. Collecting required measurement data and deploying it to the cloud. 2. Analysing the data on cloud and producing analytics result on a convenient dashboard.
This problem statement focuses on the part 1.
Everyone has been doing it the conventional way: getting on field, measuring values, and coming

back. Stay is needed when longer duration readings are required. This wastes human resources and time. A better way to take real time measurements is what we are looking for. That would involve IoT – Cloud.
You may read this blog to get an idea about Intel IoT Hackathon.
Now, we want to develop a system that is an all-in-one kit for all measurement needs, and still be very affordable. The data generated shall be stored on the cloud wirelessly.
Future usefulness: data can further be accessed from anywhere. The data created by this system on the cloud would be analysed and processed to display interactive status and results. Example:
(Example of similar dashboards: Any project planers, SAP, mobile bills, electricity wills, naukri.com, Facebook analytics, Google analytics, Likened in analytics etc. More images.)
Energy users are only aware of the energy consumption status via basic meters and local dashboard, but intelligence is missing which can practically help taking measures to bring energy efficiency to the facility. By designing this IoT based system, we are taking the first step towards intelligence in an efficient and cost effective way.
Problem Statement Create an integrated system to gather industrial parameters related to energy, temperature, pressure, etc using sensors (or meters), process them to create meaningful data, and deploy it to cloud. The system should be practically viable and implementable and should be very cost effective.

We are looking for innovative and creative methods to solve the problem.
Proposed Solution Expected features: 1. Choosing the right technology for achieving efficiency and cost effective solution 2. An integrated device which needs minimum customization later on 3. Easy to install sensors at any kind of industrial site 4. Very basic instructions so that anyone can do the installation of this system 5. Preferably GPRS based system to communicate data wirelessly 6. Database creation and entry on the cloud in real-time 7. Easy to understand and retrieval of the cloud data
End users Such a system has a huge business and technical benefits and scope. Owners/managers of all kinds of industries and commercial buildings. (Clients) In later phase: clients, solution providers, investors, data analysts etc.
Devices Hardware + Cloud. Needs database management.
Platforms, Technologies to be used Teams shall receive detailed information a week before hackathon. Various type of sensors and meters, and their data sheets may be needed for this project (maybe from Texas Instruments). Microprocessor either Raspberry Pi, Arduino or Intel Edison or any other from Texas Instruments. GSM module and sim card, or wifi module o local host for prototyping. AT commands knowledge. Please be prepared to work from scratch with minimal technical support. An article to read.
Data set, tools, resources useful in developing solution Teams/students shall know have experience in similar hands-on projects. We shall update later the selected teams about data sets, tools or resources if needed. Please be prepared to work from scratch with minimal technical support. An article to read.

Test Case, Inputs Available, Output needed Let us consider a case of boiler parameter measurement system. To go ahead with such a project, we would need to understand changes in parameters like temperature at various stages in boiler (2-6points), air flow rate sensors (or determining from the OEM of the ID and FD fans), pressure generated in the boiler (and at other places), power consumption (at various equipment of boiler) and fuel (coal, diesel, firewood) consumption rate. So, a system is needed which can take all these parameters and transfer to cloud at considerable frequency (1sec - 5min). Please research more online on how an industrial boiler works and do take help of your mechanical and electrical engg. friends :)
Output shall be just a database on cloud which can be easily understood and analysed for further operations.
At other places, the project may be very simple. Like in a case of measuring electricity consumption at various hoardings/billboards near streets, only important thing to measure is the electricity consumption at considerable frequency (1sec - 1min). However, energy measurement itself is not easy. We need data like, voltage, current, kWh, kVAh. kVAr, PF, etc. It can be taken via an RS232484/Modbus compatible energy meter already avaialbe in maket, and communicated easily to the system you develop, to transfer to the cloud. However, the cost factor is important here.
The system which are already avaialbe in market costs around 10-20k for just one measurement: energy. Eg. Using a meter like: Selec meters and communicating via RS485 to a device like: FlexiMC devices to get the readings on cloud and view anytime like:

Therefore, ultimate aim is to achieve an integrated, one-stop system with more functionality in the least price possible even when converted into a marketable product. Wide range of sensor compatibility is definitely a need and a great plus point. We would like to bring out your innovativeness and creativity to make a non-existing integrated prototype starting at this hackathon, and make a great product in near future.
Future Opportunities Based on the performance, Greetude Energy would be happy to take some students as distant interns to further work on the same project and make a viable product. Maybe some surprizes for exceptional ideas, skills and works showcased.
