Packraft Trips Packrafts, or small portable inflatable boats that weigh less than 7 pounds, can be utilized on the rivers of Canyonlands National Park. Backcountry river permits are required for any overnight use ($30 plus $20/person). Individuals utilizing packrafts must comply with all boating regulations with the exception of carrying a spare paddle and a spare PFD. The required equipment includes: PFDs for each person A repair kit for the boat(s) A first aid kit An approved toilet system: washable, reusable system equipped with RV dump fittings or commercial bag systems such as PETT, Wag Bag, or Rest Stop II that render human waste non-‐hazardous. Bag systems must be stored in hard sided containers or waterproof bags labeled ͞,ƵŵĂŶtĂƐƚĞ͘͟ A fire pan: an aluminum turkey basting pan may be carried in lieu of a fire pan for emergency use, if there is no plan of having a fire. Backpackers utilizing packrafts for less than two miles on the Green or Colorado Rivers above the confluence may obtain a $30 backpacking permit. A backpacking permit requires that overnight camping is in a camp at large zone or at a reserved designated campsite. A PFD (an inflatable USCG approved life vest, only in this case, may be used in place of a PFD only for those over 12 years old) and an approved toilet system (commercial bag systems such as PETT, Wag Bag, or Rest Stop II that render human waste non-‐hazardous) are required. If camping within ½ mile of a river a fire pan is required. If you wish to cache any equipment in the backcountry, written notification must be provided to the District Ranger; call the Reservation Office ((435)-‐259-‐4351) for information. All equipment must be labeled with names, contact information, and the date of retrieval. No resource may occur and all items must be removed.
