Code No.321053 III-B.Tech. II-Semester Supplementary Examination December 2002/January 2003 COMMUNICATION ENGINEERING (Common Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering and Bio-Medical Engineering) Time:3 hours Max.Marks:70 Answer any Five questions All questions carry equal Marks --1.a) Explain the generation of VSB modulated wave. With neat diagram also draw the response of the ‘sideband shaping filter’. b) Explain the demodulation of DSB-SC wave by using ‘costas-loop’ method. Derive the expression for WBFM. Discuss the differences between AM and FM.
3.a) b)
Draw and explain the block diagram of stereophonic FM transmission. Explain the broadcast standards for FM and AM.
4.a) b) c)
Explain the block diagram of superheterodyne receiver. Mention briefly the advantages of superheterodyne receiver over TRF receiver. Explain why local oscillator frequency should be higher than input signal frequency.
5.a)
State and prove sampling theorem. Also mention how to reconstruct the original signal from its given sample values. The signal g(t)=10 cos (60t) cos2(160t) is sampled at the rate of 400 samples per sec. Determine the range of permissible cutoff frequencies for the ideal reconstruction filter that may be used to recover g(t) from its sampled version. Explain the block diagram of PCM system. What is ‘companding’? An analog low pass signal of 4 KHz bandwidth is sampled at the rate of Nyquist, subsequently quantized and encoded into a binary PCM wave with 128 quantization levels. The word synchronization is effected by adding a synchronizing pulse at the end of each code word. Determine the bit rate of the resulting PCM signal. What is ‘switching’. Where do you apply switching techniques. Distinguish between circuit, message and packet switching.

Derive the expression for equivalent noise resistance for several amplifier stages in cascade. The first stage of a two stage amplifier has a voltage gain of 10, a 600 input resistor, a 1600 equivalent noise resistance and 27k output resistor. For the second stage these values are 25, 81k, 10k and 1M respectively. Calculate the equivalent input-noise resistance of this two stage amplifier. *** *** ***
