Admissions Definitions Glossary Early Action (EA): An option – offered by some (but not all) colleges -- to submit your applications before the regular deadlines. When you apply early action, you get admission decisions from colleges earlier than usual, and chances are often greater to earn admission via this deadline, as opposed to regular decision deadlines. 

Unlike Early Decision (ED), Early Action (EA) plans are not binding, which means that you do not have to enroll in a college if you are accepted early action.



Early Decision (ED): An option – offered by some (but not all) colleges – to submit an application to your first-choice college before the regular deadline. When you apply early decision, you get an admission decision earlier than usual, and chances are often greater to earn admission via this deadline as opposed to regular decision deadlines. 

Early decision plans are binding, so if admitted, a student must cancel other applications and enroll at the college. Some colleges have an early decision option called ED II, which has a later application deadline than their regular ED plan. Students applying under an Early Decision plan must adhere to the specific requirements and conditions set forth by the respective college regarding application policies. Students may not apply to more than one college using Early Decision, due to the binding nature of this deadline option.

Rolling Admission: An admission policy – offered by some (but not all) colleges – of considering each application as soon as all required information (such as high school records and test scores) has been received, rather than setting an application deadline and reviewing applications in a batch. Colleges that use a rolling admission policy usually notify applicants of admission decisions quickly. If one or more of your colleges offers a Rolling Admission deadline option, you should not wait too long to apply, as spots in competitive programs can fill up quickly (e.g. nursing, business, engineering, etc.). Restrictive Early Action Policy (REA) Stanford, Harvard, Yale, Princeton: An admission policy– offered by very few colleges – to submit your applications before the regular deadlines while also agreeing not to apply early elsewhere. When you apply restrictive early action, you get admission decisions from colleges earlier than usual, and chances are often slightly greater to earn admission via this deadline, as opposed to regular decision deadlines.  

Unlike standard Early Action (EA) or Early Decision (ED), applicants agree not to apply to any other private college/university under an Early Action, Restrictive Early Action, Early Decision or Early Notification program. Applicants may apply to other colleges and universities under their Regular Decision option. Exceptions  The student may apply to any college/university with early deadlines for scholarships or special academic programs as long as the decision is non-binding.  The student may apply to any public college/university with a non-binding early application option.  The student may apply to any college/university with a non-binding rolling admission process.  The student may apply to any foreign college/university on any application schedule.
