Approaches to Learning Approaches to learning are the ways in which children learn. These include children’s “openness to tasks and challenges, task persistence, imagination, attentiveness, and the cognitive way that students process information.”

The PYP position is that, in order to conduct purposeful inquiry and in order to be well prepared for lifelong learning, students need to master a range of skills beyond those normally referred to as basic. These skills are valuable, not only in the units of inquiry, but also for any teaching and learning that goes on in the classroom and in life outside the school. These approaches to learning include: thinking skills, social skills, communication skills, self management skills, and research skills.
