COMPREHENSIVE​ ​SCHOOL​ ​GUIDANCE​ ​&​ ​COUNSELLING​ ​PLANS Background Alberta​ ​Education​ ​views​ ​Guidance​ ​and​ ​Counselling​ ​Services​ ​as​ ​an​ ​integral​ ​component​ ​of​ ​the school​ ​program.​ ​A​ ​comprehensive​ ​school​ ​guidance​ ​and​ ​counselling​ ​program​ ​involves developmental​ ​guidance​ ​instructions,​ ​counselling​ ​consultation​ ​and​ ​coordination​ ​activities​ ​and services​ ​that​ ​reflect​ ​and​ ​address​ ​the​ ​identified​ ​needs​ ​of​ ​a​ ​particular​ ​school​ ​community.​ ​This planned​ ​program​ ​is​ ​comprehensive​ ​in​ ​that​ ​it​ ​is​ ​designed​ ​to​ ​benefit​ ​all​ ​students​ ​and​ ​to​ ​drive toward​ ​a​ ​balanced​ ​approach​ ​to​ ​issues​ ​in​ ​each​ ​of​ ​the​ ​identified​ ​domains: ● ● ●

Educational​ ​growth​ ​and​ ​development;

Spiritual/social/emotional​ ​growth​ ​and​ ​development; Career​ ​growth​ ​and​ ​development.

Procedures 1. The​ ​comprehensive​ ​school​ ​guidance​ ​and​ ​counselling​ ​program​ ​is​ ​formulated​ ​and​ ​enunciated in​ ​conjunction​ ​with​ ​the​ ​school​ ​plan​ ​and​ ​all​ ​the​ ​key​ ​stakeholders​ ​in​ ​the​ ​school​ ​community​ ​and is​ ​to​ ​be​ ​re-evaluated​ ​every​ ​year. 2. All​ ​junior​ ​high​ ​and​ ​senior​ ​high​ ​counsellors​ ​are​ ​required​ ​to​ ​submit​ ​their​ ​annual comprehensive​ ​school​ ​guidance​ ​and​ ​counselling​ ​plan​ ​to​ ​their​ ​principal​ ​by​ ​November​ ​1. 3. The​ ​district​ ​Counsellors’​ ​Handbook​ ​can​ ​be​ ​a​ ​resource​ ​in​ ​planning​ ​the​ ​comprehensive​ ​school guidance​ ​and​ ​counselling​ ​plan. 4. Is​ ​for​ ​all​ ​students.

Focuses​ ​on​ ​the​ ​domains​ ​of​ ​educational,​ ​personal/social/spiritual​ ​and​ ​career​ ​growth and​ ​development. Responds​ ​to​ ​crisis​ ​situations​ ​and​ ​provides​ ​timely​ ​interventions​ ​for​ ​students​ ​with serious​ ​problems. Is​ ​a​ ​joint​ ​responsibility​ ​of​ ​the​ ​school,​ ​involving​ ​the​ ​entire​ ​staff.

Is​ ​coordinated​ ​by​ ​a​ ​school​ ​counsellor​ ​who​ ​also​ ​provides​ ​direct​ ​and​ ​indirect​ ​services to​ ​students,​ ​staff​ ​and​ ​parents/legal​ ​guardians.

Is​ ​specifically​ ​designed​ ​to​ ​meet​ ​student​ ​needs​ ​that​ ​have​ ​been​ ​identified​ ​by​ ​members of​ ​the​ ​school​ ​community​ ​and​ ​the​ ​Tell​ ​Them​ ​From​ ​Me​ ​(TTFM)​ ​surveys.
