About ISHM

IIT Bombay is an internationally reputed institution that has completed fifty years of fruitful existence. Besides being centers of excellence in science and technology, the IITs have been accorded broad mandate to pursue advanced studies and research in Humanities and Social Sciences. Keeping in line with this mandate, the Cell for Indian Science and Technology in Sanskrit (CISTS) was established in IIT Bombay, over a decade ago, as a part of the Humanities and Social Sciences Department of the Institute. The teaching and research activities of the Cell primarily aim at highlighting the rich scientific and technological heritage of India.

Indian Society for History of Mathematics (ISHM), founded by Late Professor Udita Narayana Singh in 1978, has the main aim of promoting study, teaching and education in History of Mathematics at all levels. It provides a forum for exposition of ideas and experience by way of organizing periodic national and international meetings/seminars/conferences on the work of ancient, medieval and modern mathematicians. ISHM has also been bringing out its Bulletin Ganita Bharati ever since its inception. Details on the activities of the Society are available at: www.indianshm.org.

About the Conference The Conference will feature various aspects of History of Mathematics and Astronomy, especially ancient and medieval Indian mathematics and mathematics from other ancient cultures. Talks, panel discussions, paper and poster presentations will be arranged to bring out the broad scope in the study of History of mathematics and its relevance in education, and to the society at large. Paper presentations on historical precursors of topics currently being pursued in various areas of mathematical sciences will also be encouraged.
