Know Your Tennis Terms Stay on top of your game by knowing these tennis terms. Ace’s Hint: Some of these may be helpful in finishing the crossword puzzle located towards the end of this activity book. ACE– A good serve that the opponent is not able to hit with a racquet. ALLEY– Located on either side of the court, this is the area between the singles and doubles sidelines. BACKCOURT– The space between the service line and the baseline. BASELINE– The back line on the court which runs parallel with the net. COURT– The place where you play tennis. FAULT– A serve that is out. LOB- When a player hits the ball high into the air. MATCH– The entire contest. POINT– The smallest scoring unit in tennis. RALLY– A string of good shots back and forth between players. RECEIVER– The player who receives the serve. SERVE– Serve or Service means putting the ball into play. SERVER– The player who is serving to the receiver. STROKE– The motion and technique of hitting the ball with the racquet. VOLLEY– Hitting the ball before it bounces, or often the stroke used at the net.

Know the Score Tennis scoring uses special terms to keep track of the score. And, tennis for children 10 and under uses a simple scoring system to make things easier. To make sure you always know “What’s the Score”, check out some of these... Key Scoring Terms Point– A point is scored once a player is unable to return the ball over the net. It is the smallest unit of scoring in tennis. Game- A game is won when a player earns a certain number of points. Depending on your age level, a game can be the first to 4 points or the first to 7 points. Set– A set is a collection of games that have been completed. A player wins a set when they win a certain number of games. Some age groups have sets that play until the first player wins 6 games, and other age groups play until the first player wins 4 games. Match– A match is the final collection of points, games and sets. Matches for most age groups are played until the first person wins 2 sets (also known as best of 3).

8 & Under Age Group– The first team or player to win 7 points wins a game. Games are played until one team or player wins 2 games which ends the match. 10 & Under Age Group– The first team or player to win 4 points wins a game. The first team or player to win 4 games wins a set. Matches are won by the team or player that wins the best of 3 sets (first team to 2 sets). 12 & Over Age Group– The first team or player to win 4 points wins a game. The first team or player to win 6 games wins a set. Matches are won by the team or player that wins the best of 3 sets (first team to 2 sets).
