Message from the Chair of the Executive Committee

I want to take this opportunity on behalf of the Executive and the membership of The Imperial Court of Toronto to welcome all visiting Monarchs, their Court Members, Honoured Guests and Friends to Coronation XXVII! A very special welcome to our Queen Mother of the America’s Nicole the Great along with members of the ICC Council.

On behalf of the Executive we would like to thank all those TICOT Members, our Friends and supporters in the community, Sponsors for your continued support helping us raise much needed funds for the PWA Food for Life Program. Without you this past year it would not of been possible.

This year, as in many previous years, the Executive Committee and our membership have been working hard all year round to ensure the on-going success of the organization. Message from Empress XXVI - Michelle DuBarry Good evening and welcome Honored Guests, Fellow Courtiers, Friends and Family, to Coronation XXVII “Blondes having F.U.N. at the Casino” a celebration of Reign XXVI. A special welcome to Empress Nicole the Great, Queen Mother 1 of the Americas and the members of the ICC, I hope your meeting has been successful and you will be able to take some time to enjoy our great city and community. In this “The Year of our Seniors and Elders” I was affectionately known as “The Oldest Elected and Reigning Empress” (thanks Nicole). Since Sergio and Lauren Michaels Reign, I have been out every year supporting our community. From the DQ shows helping Casey House, to being involved with the Court System, that was begun in Canada by our Mother Court Vancouver, this involvement in the community gave me a renewed purpose in life and certainly contributed to me being able to do this job for the second time at the young age of 81 (I was Empress VI, 20 years ago). To the founder of The Imperial Court System, Absolute Empress I, Jose, the Widow Norton, rest peacefully, you will always be in our thoughts. I miss your talks and speeches given at the various Coronations, you truly inspired others to help those in need in communities all across Canada, Mexico and The United States. Thank you. Edmonton - Empress Vanity Fair (I remembered!!!) and Emperor JJ Velour (what a Hunk!) what a picture perfect pair you make as an E & E. I was glad Bob Toane was there and with his second wife (I was wife One, ha!). Vanity I’ve read your message in the ball book over and over, so well written. Your Court is a fantastic example of so many members still out supporting the ICS. Regina - Mercedes Benz, sorry I was not there for your step down , but I did enjoy your step up last year, I hope your Reign was a Blast. Bruce and Avaugnh, you left me last year with such a great feeling of community spirit. I loved Regina, Your Ball last year and that beautiful hotel. I was glad that Emperor XXVI Ricky Lake Ontario was there to represent us both. I believe He enjoyed it and had fun. St. Catharines and Greater Niagara - Shada, keep being that wonderful personality, wish I had a car so I could see you and others more often. Rhonda, please don’t stop doing what you do best being a wonderful representative of the ICS. Brett Woods, Emperor 8, stop just chatting “Hi” on facebook and write me a letter of your thoughts, Love Ya. Halifax - Boom Boom and Jozef, was great being back in Halifax for your step up, it brought back memories of 1971 when I used to work there at the Misty Moon. Boom Boom still using that nice shadow box you gave me, you also looked so beautiful in Edmonton, and Jozef was your perfect Emperor. Bruce Crooks, it was so nice seeing you riding into Toronto on your bike, Great Buns! And how could I forget, that

I had to watch where I stepped “Walking on Broken Glass”, that SUSHI from Vancouver, always loves to make a grand exit!!!! Hamilton - Robin and Buck, such a cute couple! Robin my half empress, I can’t thank you enough for the help you are and have given me during my Reign. I am just a simple dressmaker and love helping people, but you are my political and Court business advisor, with out you, ????? who knows? In addition you are a friend, so close to my heart as a sister and we both share quite a past!! Also enjoyed your stepdown and especially my room at The Sheraton, such a fabulous Hotel, still can’t stop thinking of that wonderful walk in Shower in my room. Congrats to Mr. Robert E. Valentine and Chantal DuValdez, may your have a fun and successful Reign. The past year I so enjoyed the Club Ren Toga Party with Miss Drew and all the members of The Hamilton Court. Calgary - My daughter Ruby Harte DuBarry so glad I made it to your step down in that beautiful city of Calgary. Buffalo - Emperor Fanny Rivera and Empress Debbie Breeze-Powers, sure hope you enjoyed that Enchanted Forest and your step-down. What a sad loss over the last few year for the Court of Buffalo and your Community, Areatha Flowers and Vicky Vogue, my best friend ever, they both will always be in my heart. London - Sorry for not being there this year for you step down, missed my Momma Accorn, always loved you. Dante, you were her partner and friend, what a Wonderful couple! Jasmine Flowers, a power for the good behind the throne. Vancouver - A favorite city of mine. The ball was elegant and My Emperor and I so enjoyed our weekend. I have lots of friends there, having been to so many coronations in the past. Coco Empress XLI and Emperor XLIT, congrats. To my Canadian inspiration, a true Mother of the ICS, Ted North, love you. Mona Lee, glad we lunched. Toronto - Tiffany Louise Charles, we didn't get to see each other as much as I would have liked, with your busy year in the restaurant business and all the charity fund raisers, but thank you for being my Heir Apparent. Carlotta Carlisle, my Imperial Crown Princess, you have been this marvelous hostess for our Toonie Tuesday fund raisers at Crews and Tangos. To Candice Kelly, Empress IX, XIV, XVII, and XXV, should have made you my Toronto In-Town Half Empress, but with you having Reigned 4 times, I figured you wanted to rest. Still, you were my best support to go to, along with Emperor XXV Ron DaMae Bouvier, the pair of you have been my back bone. Maria Del Monte, a past elected Empress of Toronto, you have been out almost every Tuesday to Crews and Tangos, supporting our shows, along with various other events. Thank you. Greetings and Welcome to everyone attending Coronation XXVII, "Blondes Having Fun at the Casino", for an evening of fun and outstanding performances. Reign XXVI started with His Majesty, RICKY Lake Ontario giving me the honor of being his Imperial Crown Prince, and then being elected as the Treasurer to the TICOT executive. The year has gone by very quickly, and not without its ups and downs, achieving over 115 TICOT events and travelling to many other cities representing our court and the community. I hope that I’ve served TICOT and their Majesties well. My travels throughout North America representing the court and community, allowed me to visit Vancouver, Surrey, St. Catharines, Buffalo, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Hamilton, and London. Visiting these cities I met people from many courts in North America, made a lot of new friends and renewed old acquaintances sharing love, respect and having a lot of FUN. My list of names to mention and thank is so long that I need a special section of this ball book. To all the people, my friends and you know whom you are, that I’ve met thru the year-You all have a special place in my heart for the respect, encouragement and the love shown to me. I thank you! To the love of my life Armando, I love you mi amor for being you and accepting me for me your crazy bear. On a sadder note, we recently lost our founder of The Imperial Court System, Jose the Widow Norton, who passed away August 19, 2013. I never had the opportunity to meet the amazing person Jose; he will be missed but never forgotten “Rest In Peace Mama”. I’d like to thank everyone involved with the International Court System for volunteered time, energy, donations and/or any other way to contribute in unselfish way raising money for our courts and communities and their charities of choice. Another reign comes to a close and we have shared the love with our community and did as we should and raised great money for charity. It’s also been a year of great learning and growth for me. With the amazing Majesties of Rickey Lake Ontario and Michelle DuBarry at the helm I truly learned the true meaning of divide and conquer. What wonderful example of business savvy in this business of charity with HIMSM Emperor Rickey Lake Ontario, and what it takes to create a legend an icon, and the figure head of an organization with the incomparable HIMSH Michelle DuBarry. I must take this opportunity to thank a person without whom I would have no career, no inspiration and no true guiding light, my drag mother and best friend Chantelle, but you know her as Farra N. Hyte. From my first days in drag sitting on Candice’s bed while she put her face on, to learning how to rhinestone, building ostrich feather fans, fabric shopping, learning to sew I owe who I am to her. She taught me how to become me and be ok with me and let my light shine. In the process she also became my greatest champion, closest confidant and rock that I could lean on. "Because I knew you I have changed for good". In a lifetime one gets blessed with the family you are born with and the family you choose. I would like to thank my daughter Katinka Kature for supporting me and keeping me sane through this year. For a million reason, from a million moments, and through a million tears, (both the founded and unfounded) I have no words to express the gratitude I have. This year has been amazing to me and I reflect back on my first year in this organization and there is a person I must thank. My first role model in the court system, true elegance, sophistication, classic eternal good taste, and the Elsa Maxwell of the Church St. set my dear friend Alan Anderson/ Her Majesty Empress 21 Bitsey Vanderbilt. Darling you taught me to keep my nails Jungle red and I can’t wait till you and I have our ashes spread at Bergdorfs. This organization can be taxing on a person which I saw firsthand this year. With an endless events and shows, and public appearances to contend with its easy to see how it can wear a person down. I always knew how taxing this job was because when I was just a boy who wanted to wear a dress I was ushered into a cool, dark apartment. It was filled with the stars I wanted to be like, the headliners, and the legends', then from around the corner came the sweetest smile saying "hi hunny", it was the day I met Candice. Empress 3 times, and continually giving back to her community, she held my hand and sold me lashes, and provided me the tools to grow. To the dozens of others who I could write pages on, the fabulous Charo Batista, Sherry Sylvain, Veronique DeHoe, Queen Mum Devinesque, my counterpart Big Kris, Kathy and each and every other person who has offered support, a kind word, and saw good in what we do, I can only say with the utmost of sincerity, thank you. Bill 33 (Toby’s Act) This year, we celebrate the passage of Bill 33 (Toby’s Act) which amended the Ontario Human Rights Code with respect to gender identity and gender expression. Ontario is the only province or state in North America that has given everyone the Right to be free from discrimination and harassment, as we welcome people to be themselves, and how they define what is “male” or “female”. This is one step forward in breaking down gender barriers. ASNPO Canada Revenue Agency implemented new Accounting Standards. Effective Jan 1, 2013, TICOT Social Society Inc. follows the new standards of ASNPO (Accounting Standards for Not-for-Profit Organizations). These new standards strengthen the partnerships between the roles of Social Fundraising for not-forprofit organizations, like TICOT Social Society Inc, and the registered charities, who are allowed to issue income tax receipts for donations. Partnering with registered charities allows TICOT to strengthen what we do best, and it has proven to be quite successful for Reign XXVI. Not-for-Profit Corporations Act Ontario’s Not-for-Profit Corporations Act, 2010 (ONCA) provides a modern, legal framework for not-for-profit corporations, including charitable corporations. It sets out how not-for-profit corporations in Ontario are to be created, governed and dissolved. Amendments to more than 80 statutes including ONCA were introduced in the legislature in June 2013. It is anticipated that these amendments will be debated in the legislature in fall 2013. If the amendments are passed by the legislature, ONCA is anticipated to come into force no earlier than six months after passage in order to ensure adequate time for not-for-profit corporations to prepare for transition. Existing not-for-profit corporations will have a three-year transition period once ONCA is in effect. Community Legal Education Ontario (CLEO) is available to provide support to notfor-profit corporations as they make the transition to ONCA. CLEO has launched the “Get Ready for the ONCA” project. The project will help Ontario’s not-for-profit corporations understand and prepare for ONCA when it comes into force. For inquiries about the project, please email [email protected].
